PEARL, Miss. -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi said Friday that it had received numerous reports from throughout the state from parents and students regarding alleged violations of students’ free speech following Tuesday’s election, Jackson television news station WAPT reported.
On Thursday, the Pearl Schools superintendent said that a school bus driver and a coach were disciplined for allegedly telling students not to say President-elect Barack Obama’s name. Reporters with 16 WAPT News received several calls from upset parents that said a school bus driver told the children on a Pearl school bus that if they said Obama’s name, they would be written up and taken to the principal’s office for disciplinary reasons. Another parent said that a coach at Pearl Junior High School told students that if they speak Obama’s name, they would face expulsion. The ACLU said the complaints encompass harassment, bullying and intimidation. "A complete prohibition of political speech violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and will not be tolerated," the ACLU said in a statement. "This election should serve as an opportunity to educate students and encourage tolerance." Parents said the incident is sad as America begins a new presidency. "They feel like they are afraid to say our president's name because they will get in trouble," mother Canishia Simpson said. "They shouldn't have to feel that way." No legal claim here, unfortunately. Supreme Court has ruled (and multiple times) that you do not have full constitutional rights until you turn 18, including the fabled 1st Amendment. It kinda sucks, but there is a reason for it.

No legal claim here, unfortunately. Supreme Court has ruled (and multiple times) that you do not have full constitutional rights until you turn 18, including the fabled 1st Amendment. It kinda sucks, but there is a reason for it. that's very sad no right to express yourself very sad indeed |

the school should loose federal funding for disrespecting the highest office in the land
it matters not what ethnicity of the holder of the office (which should not matter anyway) it is a school - schools need to teach - not only should they be permitted to say his name -- the school should be teaching it - it is called govt class -- or social studies in the lower grades -- just a thought but hey what do i know |

I did not read the entire piece, but from what was posted, I don't see anything that has to do with racism. It says that the coach and the school bus driver would take disciplinary measures if any of the students mentioned Obama's name.
Perhaps these two persons were (are) McCain supporters who spoke out of line? |

apparantly you left out a lot of the story. I guess it sounds better and gets people more worked up when you leave out the fact that it was an isolated incident and the bus driver was suspended
"The whole nation was excited, and in no way and at no time will children be disciplined for saying the name of the president-elect of the United States. Any employee who would attempt to do that would be corrected and disciplined. We expect professional behavior, respect and demeanor of staff and students. It is unfortunate that some employees mishandled this situation, but they have been disciplined and I have spent the day clarifying our policies."

I think if your gonna post an article you should post the whole article and not just pick out sentences that change the intent of the article |

Take a second look: If you read what she posted, it clearly says "a school bus driver and a coach were disciplined". Obviously it was not school policy if they were disciplined.
I'm thinking it was personal opinion that shouldn't have been stated. As a teacher myself, I know for a fact that that is a very bad idea with minors. Parents get a little annoyed when you push your personal opinions on their kids. Just a tad. the school should loose federal funding for disrespecting the highest office in the land it matters not what ethnicity of the holder of the office (which should not matter anyway) it is a school - schools need to teach - not only should they be permitted to say his name -- the school should be teaching it - it is called govt class -- or social studies in the lower grades -- just a thought but hey what do i know  Totally agreed! Of course not! Instead, she encouraged them and told them that America has gotten off track in its course for God. She said that we have to pray for our country and ask God's frogivness for electing Obama. She said a lot of stuff but by then I was too busy concentrating on looking calm that I didn't hear the rest. Yes, I know I work at a Christian school. Am I surprised? No. But that doesn't change the fact that I am pissed off. Be a Christian. Be on fire for Jesus. I don't care. Just PLEASE don't teach your children lies as fact when you haven't any idea what the truth is yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
