I don't even type that way in texts. I guess I'm one of the few who actually spells out words all the time. I'm one of the few also. I hate it when people do the "text talk". |

I'm not even gonna get into this (those that know me know what I'm talking about). I WILL say that if you're going to INTENTIONALLY type words with deliberately poor grammar, the least you can do is spell those words correctly (incorrectly?).
As far as text message-type posts....*nope, not gonna get into it* |

i make exceptions for certain posters, however, because i know that what they have to say is of substance and that i'll want to read it. hi lisa!! Bless ya babe!! |

Drives me nuts too. But I catch myself doing it sometimes as well, lol! I text as much or more than I post .. so it's really a temptation, not even conscious to use texting mode. I catch myself though. Some people just don't see the big deal in it. If it's good enough for texting someone, why not good enough for convo's on here? That's probably what they are thinking, IF they even think about it. To some it's probably a no-brainer. |

I'm even a stickler for grammar in my text messaging. I concur. It annoys me immensely when a text is ALL shortcuts and/or acronyms...and if additionally the grammar is bad, I just stop bothering to try deciphering what was typed. It's easier to type it out correctly the first time, that way the returned text won't read "HUH?" or "what did you say?"..... or in the language that short-handers would understand, "WTF?"... In any case, if the text is not understood by the recipient, the text has to be re-typed longhand in response... which ends up taking up the time that was 'supposed' to be saved by shorthanding, no? |

i just find that it takes longer, and requires more effort on my part, to actually sound out a word and think of how i can shorten it, than it does to just type it out in longhand. Exactly. I can't type that way even if I try to! I just can't do it. |

My intent was not to offend anyone that does do it on here. I guess what I was trying to say is, that a short response, isn't that big of a deal. Most of the time it's pretty easy to comprehend what is being said, and really doesn't take that much time to decipher it.
It's the long run on paragraphs where just about every word is in text message language and you can't even figure out what they are trying to say. Sorry if I offended anyone. |

I, for one, wasn't offended, I understand it grates on some people, and as I said before, my English is actually quite good, I'm just lazy! lol! Besides, I survived Keith! so I reckon I'm ok! lol! |

How we communicate seems like a legitimate question to me. I am sure perception is part of the message because we do tend to value a well made presentation. And it does take some of the guess work out. Also prevents some miscommunication. Time is often the essence if you are going to insert a thought in the forum communications.
I work from the premis this is a medium to communicate casually and if creative spelling or grammer or texting shortcuts makes people ignore me I figure their loss. I do try to contribute even if I am long winded. I keep in mind this is the world wide web and English is not the only language. Or that everyone has the opportunity or ability to habitually use a certain standard of communication. And that all groups tend to have their own slang. Computerease is pretty easy to catch on to usually. However; Life is too short to get my panties in a wad over the unimportant nuances of a making a perfect presentation when this is at least for me a form of relaxation, conversation, and exchangeing ideas or personal experiences not a formal presentation. There are times when I do find myself decifering what is said; or ignoreing what I find vulgar (the WTF seems way overused); but if I wanted only the prim and proper I would probably find a different place to communicate. If something really gets on my nerves I just use the off key. |

That is one of my biggest pet peeves. If a man messages me using shorthand like that I ignore him. I don't find a message or anything typed like that worthy of a response.

On the other side of the coin, one could argue that if it's good enough to write properly at any other time for anybody else, what makes any of us any less important? Don't we deserve the same treatment? I look at it the same way I would look at doing any one of my construction jobs: Do it right the first time, and do it right every time. If I'm not going to bother doing it right, I won't bother doing it at all. True, English is not the only language, however, this IS an English-speaking website. You don't see too many people typing in Mandarin on here. |
