Topic: Provisional Ballots | |
---|---|
I don't understand something. Maybe somebody knows about this.
Missouri, my state, is still a gray state on the electoral map. Obama and McCain are almost tied. They aren't making a decision until they count the provisional ballots. That should take about a week. But...they are only going to count about a third of the provisional ballots. That doesn't make sense to me. These people stood in line to vote. Something was wrong with the books so the Board of Elections had to be contacted. Then they were allowed to fill out a provisional ballot. They are only counting a third of them. I don't understand why they don't count all of them. |

A provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there is some question in regards to a given voter's eligibility. A provisional ballot would be cast when:
* The voter refuses to show a photo ID (in regions that require one) * The voter's name does not appear on the electoral roll for the given precinct. * The voter's registration contains inaccurate or out-dated information such as the wrong address or a misspelled name. * The voter's ballot has already been recorded Whether a provisional ballot is counted is contingent upon the verification of that voter's eligibility, believe they have 10 days to provide such proof. A guarantee that a voter could cast a provisional ballot if he or she believes that they are entitled to vote was one of the guarantees of the Help America Vote Act of 2002. |

Okay, I see that the vote being counted is contingent upon the verification of that voter's eligibility.
Two thirds not being counted sounds like a lot to me. The people I know that had to have them did nothing wrong. The books just didn't have their names. This count decides who won in our state. We are the only state that is not red or blue. We're gray. Thanks, Fran. |

only a third may be valid because the Mo. secretary of state
believes that the rest of the ballads are no good. (people voting at the wrong precinct, not being registered, or not legally having the right to vote). read more here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article5108320.ece and here: http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/politics/story/F85F88091CAD44AD862574F900174E9F?OpenDocument hope this helps |

Under the law, "If you cast a provisional ballot in the wrong polling place, it won't count," said Laura Egerdal, spokeswoman for Secretary of State Robin Carnahan." |

"The army of lawyers hired by both sides have rolled their sleeves up to contest any decisions, and Republicans will be quick to question provisional ballots wrongly handed out or filled in by voters at the wrong polling station." Thanks, HeartSoul. |

that doesn't surprise me it's like the hanging chads all over again I hope all the votes count people have a right to have their voices heard I hope so too. It would be wrong if they aren't counted. And wrong polling location or not, it is a vote. IMO. HeartSoul, I'll tell you why I think that so many people are going to the wrong polling places. It started with the last census. The lines around the neighborhoods changed big time. They changed the wards. The polling place you had for 20 years is no longer your polling place. We all have different wards and aldermen now. Look at the electoral map. The Show Me State is the only gray state. |

ok how do they know which vote was cast by which voter
if it is truly anonymous they pull the pages apart and supposedly once you put the ballot in the box there is no way of identifying the voter to the ballot i used a written ballot because i was writing in a candidate all of them went in the same box and no numbers were on the ballot (i am in ohio) |

I just think about some poor old lady that didn't pay attention to the card and thinking that she had to go to the same place she used to go. |

I believe people went to the right places in my area they had 2 places to vote and some people were sent to where I voted and some to the other polling place they had removed some people and sent their information to the other polling place some people were removed and not notified it happens a lot I don't think people are lazy, I believe the system is flawed |
