I read your profile. It doesn't say much. How do you know that they are not reading your profile.

Or? Are you speaking hypothetically?

Most people need to satisfy their visual requirements in a potential mate before they invest time in getting to know someone.

Call it shallow if you will, but we all do it to some degree.

I read profiles, cuz a lot of folks make it quite clear what they are and are not looking for. I smoke, a lot of people have an email block on smokers. No sense in me knocking on their door.
If they are all about bars and clubbin', I am gone cuz I don't drink. Just makes sense to me to read it.

In answer to the original question....

Why would I bother to read profiles of so many people who will not show thier own photograph? I am forced to assume that if they will not let me see what they actually look like....then the things they will write are probably gonna be evasive or misleading too.

I am probably wrong with the good people here...but, my experiences elsewhere tells me different.

That's my point exactly...seems people are more interested in the pics (be they pics of people or fictional pics) rather than reading the profile.

People can post any picture of a person...not necessarily themselves. So how would you know if it was really them that you were speaking to in the first place?

Just because you put a real picture up doesn't mean you're not faking what you say. I've heard enough lines to believe that.

Ha, I don't wear the hat at work anymore... I lost so many I just stopped. heh, I'm surprised people remember that and the pink towel pics....

Yeah, I haven't been on in a long time.... life just got complicated and all that shiz.

how've you been?

Still here, got back together with an ex-gf for awhile, then that fell apart, now I'm chasing one from a grocery store, but that's just -- weird....I have a thread over in the Computer forum about that (e-mail) situation --

You know, I'm still moderating, still annoying people here -- oh, I just ordered the proof copy of my second book, and if that gets here and it's OK, it will be published before the end of the month, so I guess I've done ONE productive thing....!

As to this whole profile question -- I would LOVE to have something to read, something to work with, something that would let me get a sense of actually being able to know something about somebody. But it almost never happens.

I'll say this -- if someone wants me to read their profile, they should at least give me something worthwhile to read. But that's really only happening about 2% of the time.

I don't post my real pics because I want a genuine guy who wants to get to know the real me before making a decision based on my pic. I think what I have personality-wise should amount to more than whether I am photogenic or not.

But generally, and I'm sure this is the case for a lot of minglers, if I start talking to someone and really get to know them, they tend to get a pic and then it becomes something more special for the two of us instead of something that everyone has.

And in the meantime, I post pics that represent things about myself. It's about getting to know someone, you know?

Exactly my point! Thank you! And anyway, most of you guys out there don't post what you do for a living or how much money you make doing it, right? So then why should I have to post a pic? Seems some things are better left being a bit of a mystery.

Just a friendly reminder everyone,

It is not acceptable to question a members authenticity on the forums.

A little mystery is fine. "I'm too lazy to provide even the barest shred of anything about myself" is another thing altogether.

It makes no difference to me if someone posts their pics or not. Pics don't offer anything in support of actual "substance" -- even if they ARE real -- all they do is fill in a minor, superficial gap that SHOULD be primarily covered by what one WRITES in the profile -- as far as I'm concerned.

The fact that people can't be bothered to say more than "Anything you want to know, you'll have to ask" tells me, very quickly, that this is someone who would bore me to tears within a week.

Why doesn't anyone seem to read anyone else's profile instead of just looking at the pictures?

'cause sometimes the photos show more of who a person is or is not that their photos?

Let's face it. If they ain't postin', their profiles are probably FoS.
