It means settling for what is available. Settling for someone who likes you and is committed to you even though you don't feel the same way. Just because you don't think what you really want will ever come along.

It isn't better looking or better sex, it is losing any hope that one day you might meet the person of your dreams and settling for the next person that comes along and shows any interest in you.
