Oh no, Fran... he and I are chatting about my aversion to them, he is trying to differentiate and to explain why they are NOT bad. laugh

They are on my dealbreaker list.

REPOSTED:

A "Classical" RPG (Role Playing Game) is something like Final Fantasy 7. It is a one player game where the player takes control of a group of characters with an ultimate goal in mind: defeat a guy named DELETED DUE TO USER ON SITE USING SAME NAME AS THIS CHARACTER. It is entertaining but there is a time limit on it, you can only play it for so many hours until there is nothing left to do.

An MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) is like Everquest or World of Warcarft (WoW). Those games can ONLY be played online and, unlike a classical RPG, is limitless in the hours that it can be played as long as the game publisher keeps releasing things to do "in game". Otherwise, the player will level their character up to the max level, do all the quests and thats kind of it (see classical rpg).

Here are more of his words:
"You started your paragraph out with why RPG's are bad but ended on a note related to MMORPG's; while some would argue that there is no difference I would have to disagree that there is a big difference. On the RPG side, say Final Fantasy 7, depending on whether or not the player went through and did all of the side quests and unlocked everything, total game play tops out at around 80 hours. That is a long game even by todays standards and, I have to admit, there were entire weekends that I sacked just to play that game; it was fun and mindless.

MMORPGS, like WoW, I can see the downfall there: people play that game for literally 16 hours on end all day every day. That is an addiction for sure but i would not go so far as to say that it is completely unhealthy for EVERYONE. For example: there was a story a few months back in Wired about a guy that went in for an interview and, through the course of the interview, the interviewer asked the guy if he played WoW. Turns out the guy being interviewed was the Guild Master of one of the largest and most successful guilds in WoW. Well the interviewer is the person that wrote the article and went on a tirade about how it talks impecciable social/managment skills to keep a group that size together, albeit fictional, because real world social and pyschological principals still apply. Would i say this is more the exception then the rule, yes absolutely, but I don't neccessarily think that these types of video games are bad."

I did read it and I have/had friends that play both plus also still play Dungeons and Dragons.

Some of them you thought weren't the type, but it is no different then someone that plays xbox or play station for that long also. But it is more acceptable for them, since it is sports or war games.

The game I perfer to play is chess.

I use to play xbox/play station alot with my nephew, neices brother, and brother inlaw. I have a old xbox that they gave me I think I have turned in on twice the last year.

MMORPG's are far worse then RPG's. I know plenty of people that spend WAY too much time on line playing MMORPG's, including my son's friends. We limit my son's on-line time, so that it doesn't become an issue.
RPG's can only last so long due to the finite structure of the game. You can only defeat the game so many times before it gets boring.
