RNC to File FEC Complaint on Obama Fundraising Practices

A lawyer for the Republican National Committee today said the party will ask the Federal Election Commission to look into the source of thousands of small-dollar contributions to the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama.

The RNC is alleging that the Obama campaign was so hungry for donations it "looked the other way" as contributions piled up from suspicious, and possibly even illegal foreign donors.

"We believe that the American people should know first and foremost if foreign money is pouring into a presidential election," said RNC Chief Counsel Sean Cairncross.

Cairncross alleged there was mounting evidence of this, and cited a report in the current issue of Newsweek magazine that documents a handful of instances where donors made repeated small donations using fake names, such as "Good Will" and "Doodad Pro."

The Newsweek report says that earlier this year the Obama campaign returned $33,000 to two Palestinian brothers in the Gaza Strip who had bought T-shirts in bulk from the campaign's online store -- purchases that count as campaign contributions. The brothers had listed their address as "Ga.," which the campaign took to mean Georgia rather than Gaza.

"While no organization is completely protected from Internet fraud, we will continue to review our fundraising procedures," Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt told the magazine.

At the heart of the RNC complaint is a federal fundraising rule that lets campaigns accept donations under $200 without itemizing the names and addresses of the donors on its campaign finance reports. The rule was intended as a matter of practicality -- it did not seem reasonable to ask a campaign to gather that information from every five-dollar donor.

But the Obama campaign has raised more than $200 million this way, a staggering sum for donations that will not be subjected to outside scrutiny.

Obama campaign aides said today that a number of steps have been taken to safeguard against foreign or illegal contributions coming in in smaller increments. The measures include: requiring donors to present a passport at fundraising events held for Americans overseas, ending contributions to the Obama Store from contributors with addresses outside the U.S. or its territories, and requiring donors to enter a U.S. passport number when contributing via the Americans Abroad page.

"When we were made aware of an ad for a Nigerians for Obama fundraiser in a Nigerian paper, our attorneys sent a letter to the paper making it clear the event had nothing to do with our campaign, and that we would not accept contributions from the event," one Obama aide said.

Nice generalization ... again. No hate here.

First, these are allegations by.... the opponent. Allegations. By the opponent. Of which, the Obama campaign has said they are doing what they can to ensure that these small contributions are not foreign.

Second, do I need to bring up McCain's 'questionable' fundraiser in London? or his Ottawa fundraiser that was alleged to be illegal? or his fundraising link to Columbian terrorist? I don't think I need to, because I think these are just mud slinging as well. And almost always the allegations are political posturing. You do realize that it's the RNC making the allegations right?

Obama has a very efficient machine for soliciting donations.

Seems every thing is done utilizing latest web technology.

E-mails and text messages are the wave of the future.

Obama only asks for $5 donation.

I'm waiting for someone to state that the Reps and Dems are funded by the same special interest groups and corporations. I guess I just did! To say we have a democracy is insulting to me. You will never have a true democracy when "someone's" dollar is at risk!

Ok. Let me make sure i have this right. The RNC is complaining that Obama is accepting donations of under two hundred dollars - legally - and they are complaining that he shouldn't be allowed to do that? I suppose that the Republicans think that the fact that he has raised a huge amount of money in this fasion is what "unfair".

God how I wish they would pack up their candidate and his flash in the pan; political pander; unqualified; and disingenuous running mate and go home.

Face the facts lady. McCain is desperate and the rest of the campaign is going to be smear smear smear because it is the only hope he has left to him. This country has had quite enough of the GOP to last it quite a few years. Don't worry though...in another 8 - 12 years the general American populace won't be any happier and they will think that the New Republican on the Block is the cure to their woes and will put one back in office. 8 years later they will remember why they voted em out to begin with.

We have the senate and congress with members who have been sitting on thier seats since Linclon was President!!.... They have figured every way possible to undermind any Administration..Republican or Democrat, if its not thier party,..even if it hurts the country.

There's no truth here. Only allegation and conjecture. And I did answer your 'facts'. I could easily cut and past the allegations against McCain's fund raising, but, as I said, it's political posturing as well. And as far as hate goes..... dripping.

Amen brother! If "WE THE PEOPLE" don't start taking control of our government back and soon we will find that any control we once had has disappeared. Does anyone else see the danger in letting these two parties be the ones who get to decide who gets money for elections? Every four years they convince us all to hate each other and we have the greatest spectator sport in the world. The only problem is that it is Professional Wrestling! It is all scripted and submitted for our approval! Doesn't matter which team wins. The system continues as is with the two parties doing everything it can to shut out anyone else. We are living in Roman times and America is going to collapse from the center of its rotten core.

Investigations are good. I bet they won't find anything worth talking about, now on McCains side there is more for him to worry about with investigations

One of my favorite quotes of all time was by George Carlin. He said, " When you're born, you get a ticket to the freak show. When you're born in America, you get a front row seat." Every election year, I just grab the popcorn and watch the punches fly... elections could have even been the precursor to reality programming.

I have been writing letters already about this fact. I started with the fact that the national debates only include two parties when we are a multi party government. I am still writing. I will see what kind of response I get and go from there but by the next election if I have my way, or enough people and myself have our way there will be more national coverage of all candidates not just the two.

Investigate then ALL..DEMS too or sit down!!!!
