Dry your eyes little one
I hear this whispered right before my eyes close
Snapping open like a shade pulled too far my eyes now alert
Looking around in the darkened room, seeing nothing but knowing she is there
Snuggling and nestling down deep into the quilt she made for me long ago
A feeling of comfort and security envelopes me as I now drift off to sleep
Much needed sleep, awake far too many days, too much coffee consumed, not enough food eaten, tears continuously shed and tissues that were shred
Her hand upon my cheek, caressing it softly as only an angel can
No more words are spoken there is no need, for I know everything she will say
I have said it to myself over and over again in the last few days
In those moments of clarity before the sadness would overcome
Breathing softly with the occasional wheeze from too many cigarettes smoked
Eyes fluttering open one last time hoping to catch a glimpse but knowing it won't be
Eyes closing as sleep takes over, knowing it won't hurt like this forever
