I wanted to quit smoking even though I had always been a light smoker. Smoking is an unhealthy habit irregardless of how often or what type of cigarette you indulge in. So I tried cold turkey and that approach did not work for me. I then asked the advise of a doctor and she wrote me a prescription for a drug called "Chantix" which has about a 46% success rate for helping people quit. I used that and for me it has worked. I am on 8 months now without a smoke.

This did not necessitate god, or my belief or trust in any higher powers, nor salvation, nor a lot of proselytizing. It in fact only required me setting my mind to quitting with the additional assistance of modern medicine. happy

Are you still taking the Chantrix? I'm only asking because I too am a smoker that wants to quit, but I don't want to just trade one habit for another. If you can take the Chantrix until the craving for cigarettes goes away, and then stop taking the Chantrix without the craving for cigarettes returning, then it's definitiely something I want to check out.

No Im off it. You first get what is called a "starter kit". Try that and see how you react to it. There can be some side effects but I had no major problems. I am no longer on it and have not smoked since. It only takes about 2-3 days for all of the nicotine to vacate your system. A little longer if you are a heavy smoker. Once the nicotine clears, then it is merely a psychological addiction but to be sure, don't underestimate that. I had to stay away from smokers for a period of time to not smell it. But the Chantix helps and you simply feel satiated, almost as if you just had a cigarette. It does not work for everyone as the studies indicate (46% or so success rate) but seeing as nicotine addiction parallels that of opium, those are significant numbers. You might need to stay on the Chantix longer as everyone is different in that respect. Ask your GP if you have one.

My sister and both my husbands were/are heavy smokers. I have never smoked myself. I asked them what it is that they enjoy about smoking that they can't quit, and it seems that the drug relaxes you, and allows you to focus mentally a little better.

When my second husband stopped cold turkey he was mentally scattered and confused (space case) for about two weeks, but he got over that. It was really noticeable because he was always extremely focused and clear headed, suddenly it seemed he was getting Alzheimer's.

My sister is very a wiry and nervous type. She is trying to quit now because she has discovered some nodules on her lungs and a few other places. When she goes cold turkey she is twice as nervous, almost like she is on speed.

So cigarettes are a depressant that relax and allow you to slow down and focus. Like very mild pot.

The ability to focus is improved by consuming blue green algae and other very green vegetation, plankton, see weed, broccoli etc. If you are trying to quit, you might want to try some of that kind of food supplement.

I actually haven't had a cigarette in 4 days now. I have always done this cold-turkey (twice before in my life I have quit for 5+ years.) I was just interested in finding something to "take the edge off the withdrawal symptoms". I missed that it was prescription only in the first post though, so it's not really my cup of tea. But I appreciate the info. And I am currently using a blue-green algae supplement.

Yeah it is perscrip only and insurance wont cover it. Son of a bitc-! It does take the edge off. I did have some issues with it as far as nightmares and vivid dreams and kind of like a heightened sense of perception. It was strange but it kind of went away on its own. I was also a very light smoker so that might make a difference on how effective it can be. It was recommended to me initially by my friend in town here who is a commercial pilot and he has been smoking 2-3 packs a day for over 15 years. surprised Thats some serious smokin.

I was going to try chantrix, so it worked for you, might have to check it out, kinda expensive but not really any more than the cigs. I went to a smoking cessation clinic and the wellbutrin route, thought it was a joke, didn't work for me. Heard the chantrix kills the cravings.

Yeah I had also tried Welbutrin but a couple years earlier. I didnt like the feeling I got from it. It kind of upset my stomach a little. Chantix is expensive but you are right, it balances out and pays for itself and you will notice once you arent spending $5-6 every day for a pack or whatever you smoke. Either way, I really wanted to quit. Im 36, not a kid and women can have an increased risk for certain medical conditions related to smoking and it wasn't a good idea to keep going with that.

Just out of curiosity, why isnt this posted in the religious section?

The last thing I want to read when I come to this poetry board is someone prosletyzing his religious dogma to me.

And FYI, it takes alot more than a belief in an unseen entity to take back control from your addictions. If you doubt that, go talk to anybody who's been an addict.

This WAS and "IS" MY CREATIVE WRITING!!!

HOW DO YOU or ANY MODERATORS FEEL? THINK? or BELIEVE YOU CAN SEPERATE my thoughts in WORDS as NEEDNG TO BE SOMEWHERE ELSE?????

This was as much a write about addiction as it was the THOUGHT of another having the Entidy of GOD with them????????

I want to know who was the MODERATOR who joined one PERSON'S VOICE and MOVED THIS FROM POEMS AND CREATIVE WRITINGS.????????????

POEMS can BE and HAVE BEEN about """NY"""SUBJECT MATTER!!!!!!!!!

Where's all MY AMEN'S and HOORA'S on THIS???

This makes me feel like if the word GOD iseven uttered, WE NEED TO POST IT ""ONLY"" IN HERE!!!grumble grumble grumble grumble grumble
