Ok.. So I grew up using windows. I've been using windows since.. Hell pre 95.. And, I buy this laptop a few months back.. Of course it has vista.. So, I'm used to the "real" windows.. The one if there is a problem you have to manually fix it. Hey if the OS isn't broken don't fix it bill. Anyways, I was wondering if there is a way to over ride the automatically restart Internet Explorer when ever there is "a problem." If anyone knows how to get rid of this STUPID feature.. PLEASE let me know. I can't take it anymore

Pretty much.. I'd love to. But heard that it was dam near impossible, and that it was basically useless because they are going to stop making patches and what not for XP

Vista will die a slow, painful death, in my opinion. It will be like the Windows ME and various others. I ran Windows 98 SE for years... even after support stopped. It was stable and did what I needed it to do. I tried Win2k, but wasn't happy with it.. especially with driver support. It wasn't until XP Pro that I switched. I expect to stay here for a while too.

But that doesn't answer your question.

Is just internet explorer restarting? Or the whole OS is rebooting?

they've already halted further production of XP on the retail level. you can still get updates and service releases, but they're solely through the internet.

if you're wanting an off-the-shelf OS, you're only choice would have to be Vista (short of Linux, that is).

there should be some sort of option you can use to stop IE from restarting though, as it wouldn't make sense to NOT put such a thing in. but then again, we ARE talking about windows vista, though.

Found a fix for this issue. Go to Internet Options-> Advanced and first choose "Restore Advanced Settings" and then click "Reset". Restart IE.

(stole this off one of the MS forums)

Hmm I dunno what I did when I got this computer *probably tried to make it more like XP* but now that I did that reset.. My IE is flying in between pages lol

Thankfully its only the IE.. Otherwise I'd of sold it back to HP as soon as I got it. It's just irritating to have vista tell me when there is something wrong with a perfectly good site and causes IE to shut down and restart. If I so much as click the x to fast *if I have 2 tabs open* or even one if I try to go to a differant site it freezes tells me there is something wrong with it and restarts

I found XP for sale at Office Max right across from mall I work at. Will not go for Vista (looks like going to go the way of ME which more or less was 95 rebadged with a little 98 mixed in...

Well sure. As long as you don't want anything you like to run on it.

Umm, huh? I run OSX Leopard and I am trying to think what I want that I can't run. Netflix instant movie views is one that bugs me but I just watch them when they arrive but I have had no issue with anything else. I use a chat program called Adium that houses every chat program I've ever heard of under one roof--so that's a real pain (as opposed to having to log in to a bunch of different programs)--OSX lets me run Word and Excel but I don't in favor of Neo Office--the dreaded open source.

I don't want to get into a huge issue with Microsoft v. Apple (I get enough of that from our IT Dept. at work) but I do think it's funny that a lot of MS users are running from an OS that was more than 5 years in R&D. I see now they have the Mojave experiment going where users are tricked into playing with Vista for 3 minutes before being told it's really Vista. Wow, I don't know but I would not really be advertising that!!

Still, I have and use both a Mac and a PC and always will. So, I'm far from anti-PC. I just love what I can do on a Mac--and how much simpler certain things are--in my opinion.

Later,

Drew

That wasn't anything against Mac. It's simply the truth that there isn't the software available for Mac that there is for PC.... specifically games for the kids, but also many applications that are not 'mass' enough to write for both platforms.

I'm far from a Mac basher (except when it comes to having to support one at work, lol)

Hi--it's all good. I did not take your post as a Mac bashing post--I apologize if my response seemed bitter--really, I was just making my case and like I mentioned, I still use a PC for most of the day. What I think Mac has done right however is to make a system that people do enjoy for certain things. Since they are still so behind MS and since that is not likely to change I understand that there will be limits (e.g., Chrome, the new browswer by Google is not yet ready for Linux) but I still have fun.

:)

if you're looking for a laugh, go out and get a copy of the latest issue of 'maximum pc' magazine, which goes at length on how microsoft totally botched the release (and functionality) of windows vista. in fact, on the cover, it says 'inside microsoft's $6 billion failure'.

with a title like that on the cover, you KNOW it's gonna be some good readin'.

I was a bit pissy when I got my computer with Vista basic and found out that I could no longer take still shots with my webcam like I could on XP.

Why does everyone hate Vista? I haven't jumped on this bandwagon. I think Vista is great!

Then again previously I had windows ME...talk about a JOKE.

Seriously what is so different about vista? I havent had any trouble with the transfer.huh

Mostly for me it was little things, like having to enter the admin password to delete an icon off the desktop. The two games I played on windows wouldn't run/install or both. Didn't like to network properly so I could use excess hard drive space for storage by my Ubuntu computer.

If Vista was the only thing I had and Civ IV would have run on it (I have friends whose copies work fine together) I probably wouldn't have replaced it. Having done so, I haven't regretted it.
