It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota; western South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana ... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we' re looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.

'When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea, says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature 's financial analyst.

'This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years,' reports The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin , but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' And it stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada. For years, U. S. oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's massive reserves... and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!
That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 41 years straight.

The USGS report says 3.65 Billion barrels recoverable from the Bakken formation @ 20,680,000 barrels per day=176 days of oil that's not a whole lot of oil. Not even 1/2 a years worth.

Yeah, just toss a little Ex-Lax at your "Bakken Formation" and loosen that baby up. This kind of nonsense is smoke to take our focus off of making America independent of oil, period.

Taking a long-range view, I think domestic supply is the last source we should touch. There will come a day when many supplies are exhausted and I'd much rather those be other than our own. We're managing right now, but we have to accelerate the development of alternatives.

We definitely need to develope alternatives, but in the meantime, we need to use what we now have....otherwise we will be slaves to the mid east countries longer and longer, more and more....

That whole thing is election year spin the oil companies have thousands of miles of leases off shore they do not drill on and many more for sale they do not buy. Its just a fox news spin game of blame the democrats for not doing something when in reality we have an oil man in the white housewith lots of oil men friends who are now billionairs and the problem realy isnt oil its refinaries to process the oil into gas.

Excitement reached fever pitch in April when the US Geological Survey released a new estimate that there were between three and 4.3 billion barrels of recoverable oil in the Bakken. That was a 25-fold increase on the agency's previous 1995 estimate of 151 million barrels.

The field was first discovered in the 1950s but as the oil was soaked into the rock in an extremely thin layer across a huge area traditional vertical driller operations were of little value.

But oil companies recently developed the technology to drill down 10,000 ft and then out horizontally for the same distance in just a month. The shelf of shale is then flooded with a million gallons of water and sand to fracture the rock and free paths for the crude to flow for extraction.

MINNEAPOLIS - Republicans are putting John McCain's presidential prospects above their wish to drill for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Members of the GOP platform committee voted Wednesday to stick with an energy plank that doesn't mention drilling in the refuge, saying it would only highlight an area where they differ with the Arizona senator. McCain opposes drilling in that protected land, and some committee members said they would rather bring him around on the issue once he's in the White House than widen their disagreement now.
