Right after my husband died there were about four new songs that came out and one of them was "When I Get Where I'm Going" by Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton. Now, that was a tear jerker because one line in there about seeing his granddaddy, is a line he would've written if he had written that song himself and it reminds me of him so much.
The other songs were by George Strait and LeAnn Rimes but can't on the spur of the moment name the songs but I could relate to them so much. I'm sure my fellow widows and widowers can also.
Music to me is such a blessing and it helps heal the pain, even if it does bring back memories, the memories are good ones and I have healed by listening to them.

When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge

Lets Stay Together - Al Green

Feelin` That Way/ Anytime That You Want me - Journey

These were my wife Nancy`s 4 favorite songs.
The morning she passed away. I was on my way home and turned on the radio. The first song I hear When A Man loves A Woman by Percy Sledge came on the radio. I`m like, Ok Baby I`ll be all right.

That afternon. I got up and went to make her funeral arrangements. I turn on the radio. The first song I hear is Lets Stay Together by Al Green. I`m like, Ok Baby I`m kewl and I`m all right.

The day of my wifes funeral. I turn on the radio. The first songs I hear is Feelin` That Way/ Anytime That you Want Me. I`m driving crying my eyes out. It`s Ok Baby, I`ll be all right.

Coincidence, I don`t think so. It was a sign to me that everything was going to be all right.

Ed, I'm so sorry. It's amazing how that happend for you. She's looking out for you I'm sureflowerforyou flowerforyou flowerforyou

From being a cop, and a soldier, there are two songs that even now, just thinking about them, have me misty-eyed.

Taps and Amazing Grace.

I have seen, and been to too many funerals for people that I shared those professions with, and hope to never have the need to hear them again, under those circumstances.

The story behind Taps has been told in different ways, but this is the one I know best.

During the Civil War, a man and his son fought on different sides. The elder was a doctor, and the son was a regular soldier. One night, the elder was on the battlefield treating the wounded. To a professional like himself, he cared not which uniform a man was wearing. He came upon a man that was dying, and started treating him. The man, sadly, died soon after. When the cloud cover broke, and the moonlight filtered through, the man then realized that it was his own son in front of him that had just died.

In his grief, he went through his son's pockets, and found 24 notes on a piece of paper. Taps was born.

I know exactly what you mean about music being a blessing, and helping to heal the pain. Music is the only "friend" of mine that has never let me down. Yes, it does bring back memories, great memories, and Yes music does help you to heal by listening to songs.

Butterfly Kisses

My baby brother got married this weekend and Mom used to sing him to sleep with this one. He danced with her to this song and it was the sweetest damn thing I ever saw. Cried like a baby.

little known song, but very, very moving:

"martinis on the roof" by superchunk

written about a friend in another band that had died in a car accident. moving, meaningful lyrics from a band not known to pay much attention to them. at the end of the last chorus the singer cries "you left too soon/i loved you so" and breaks into this sad, raw guitar solo...
damn tearing up thinking about it...

Amazing Grace gets me too. A very good friend of mine shot himself when we were 15. Kid was an honor roll student, played every sport in Jr high and high school. Over 300 people showed up for his funeral, and the entire group sang Amazing Grace at his funeral.
