Topic: Bees Remember Things?

A couple months ago, I was reading one of those trendy science-type
magazines (you know the ones, they always have articles with titles like
"Will SETI harm the rain forests?" and "Do hamsters understand
calculus?" and such), and they had a story about a bunch of scientists
who were examining the memory capacities of various animals. The idea
was that they wanted to figure out if memory played a significant part
in the animals' behaviors.

Anyway, there was a part of the article where they were talking about
the scientists' experiments with bees, and they said something like, "If
you do a bee a favor, he will remember that for several days
afterwards."

This struck me as interesting until I thought about it for a few
minutes. Then, it occurred to me that I'm really not sure what kind of
favor I could do for a bee. Does he need a few dollars? Maybe a ride?
Some career advice? What could I say? "Well, Sam, here's the deal.
You're a bee. My advice is you buzz around a little, maybe pollenate
some flowers, go talk to the queen, make some honey, do that weird
little beehive dance that supposedly tells all the other bees where the
food source is, I don't know." I mean, this is a bee we're talking about
here, what are the options?

It's not like he's going to get a job with Microsoft, or even Enron....

The second problem I saw with the whole premise is that, OK, so the bee
remembers you did something for him. Fine, now what? How is he supposed
to express his appreciation? Does he tell you where the good honey is?
Does he say, "Well, hey, you did me a favor, so I'm not going to sting
you"? Sure, it's good not to be stung, I guess, but then again you have
to wonder about the rationality of a creature whose sole defense
mechanism will kill him and only briefly hurt his enemy. Think about it.
If you lived in a neighborhood that was really dangerous, would you
carry a weapon around that would kill you if you used it, while
simultaneously giving your attacker a little twinge of pain? I just
don't see this as a particularly effective defensive strategy.

Darwin would be appalled by such a concept, and let's not even get into
what Donald Rumsfeld would think about it.

Next issue, they're testing to see if scorpions like peanut butter....

Dane, the llamas are all clean and shiny and ready to pull the '68
Volkswagen over to the car wash.

Shenadra, I don't know if I'd be much help up there, I never did get the
metric conversion thing. How does it go? How many hours goes into how
many gallons again? Or do you guys use kilobushels or what? It's all
Greek to me. Or Canadian. What do you call a person from Ontario, an
Ontarionian?

Txs, I'm not much good at repairing things but I can take newspapers and
books and magazines and put them in semi-acceptable piles, if that
helps.

laugh LOL Ok let see if I can stop laughing long enough to type.

Bee's can do favors, Just get them to come over and clean the windows.
It may take them a bit longer but just think how clean your windows will
be considering they can reach all the places that you can't. I know I
hate cleaning my windows. I llama's can pull a Volkswagen then I am sure
a bee can clean a window ot two. Or maybe even three or four!

But yes a bee has a really bad defense. Considering once they sting you
they die!

But you better keep us posted on on that scorpion and peanut butter
thing. That type of information could come in very handy never know when
a person would want to invite on over for peanut butter cookies and
milk!
