From the BBC
Arnold Schwarzenegger of California has moved to end a budget crisis by sacking 22,000 state workers and ordering pay cuts for 200,000.

The most populous state in the US faces a budget deficit of more than $15bn (£7.6bn), and legislators are struggling to agree a spending plan.

The cuts, which will save $100m a month, are designed to put pressure on politicians to end the budget crisis.

But a leading official in the state challenged the decision to cut pay.

California has one of the largest economies in the world and it has no way to pay contractors for many of the services it provides.

Some 30 American states face budget deficits caused by rising costs and falling revenues in a slumping economy but California's is by far the largest.

Will he be back?

Only if people agree with his methods to 'terminate' budget deficits.

I found this quote ...

"To those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say, Don't be economic girlie men!" –at the Republican convention

Like the lovely liberal state of Minnesota, whose largest employer is the state itself, (more than 3M, Best Buy, Target, and Medtronic combined) California's liberal policy of creating worthless tax sucking government programs has caught up with itself. Someone needs to show that they have the nuggets to plug some of the holes in the sieve.

SAN FRANCISCO—Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken his scorched-earth tactics in an ongoing battle over California's state budget to the next level. In a press conference today, Schwarzenegger signed an executive order eliminating the jobs of as many as 22,000 state workers and slashing the pay of more than 200,000 state government employees to $6.55 an hour, the federal minimum wage. Schwarzenegger portrayed the move as an emergency measure, saying the state cannot pay its bills without a state budget. Lawmakers were required by law to pass a budget by July 1.

"Today, I am exercising my executive authority to avoid a full-blown crisis and keep our state moving forward," Schwarzenegger said. "This is not an action I take lightly, but we do not have a budget, and as governor, I have a responsibility to make sure our state has enough money to pay its bills."

I am curious which jobs will be slashed. Paper clip attendant? Door knob polisher? Chair warmer? My guess is he left the few important departments alone and hammered the government teat sucking wastes of money. I am glad to see that he has shown himself to have a pair and did what he thought needed to be done. Either way he will be damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
