I got a 16 week old kitten yesterday. He is cuddly and sweet, but peed on my comforter. We showed him the litter box a few times yesterday, but had the door to my room only cracked as the a/c was on. There was plenty of room for him to get out, but I'm not sure if he left.

We showed him the litter box again this morning. Any thoughts, suggestions?

Keep him in the area where the litter box is until he knows what he is suppose to do.

The litter box is in the basement, his food is in the kitchen. He had a litterbox where he came from, it was just in his cage/crate.

So my thing is, he knows where his food is!! Should I bring the litterbox upstairs? I have an older cat, used to the litterbox in the basement already.

The older cats will adjust.... but at night if that's when his problem is.... put him down in the basement... you can try the litter box in the kitchen but just defeats him learn where it is suppose to me.

I am willing to suck it up and keep the door open and just be hot.... you think he might've thought he couldn't get out?

I would hope so, if not you got a lazy cat... and those have to go bye-bye!

Oh no, he is definitely not lazy. He played with this little mouse toy with my son until he panted and his little pink tongue was hanging out. He napped for an hour after that....

I'm going to give that a try and see, leaving the door open that is.

It's a kitten; it doesn't 'think' anything. It doesn't reason, it's all instinct.

Keep the food and litterbox near each other!!

If you catch the kitten peeing elsewhere, take a sample of it and put it into the litterbox and put her in with it!! This will mark her territory and she should go to the litterbox all the time from now on unless she is really caught short!!

EDIT You will probably need to use a new litterbox for the new kitten as it (especially being a he) may not use the other cats litterbox for a while anyway!!

Thank you.... unfortunately I could not sample the comforter one... but I got what you mean. We have been putting her in the litterbox, but she jumps right out. I am checking when I get home to see if there is anything in there. My older cat didn't use it yesterday either....so I suppose it is possible she did it as she was mad there is another cat... but I doubt it. The older cat is lazy.... so she usually pees at night when she drags herself from the basement (she can't stand the heat) and eats and drinks.

A "he" cat will be more sensitive to another cats urine/faeces so maybe a new box. This will only last a while. He will adjust in time!!

That might be a good idea. Some cats are very picky about their litter boxes. I would definitely keep it near the food though, since he's used to that.
