Sounds interesting.

If someone told you that there was a way that you could help cure diseases such as Cancer, or AIDS, or Multiple Sclerosis, without having to donate money....

Would you think it's just a scam of some kind?

What if I told you that it isn't a scam?

Would you be interested in helping?

I'd say "Tell me more"

Sorry folks. I had to get some sleep, and I was limited on time this morning, then I had to go to work....lol

Since a lot more people appear to be interested, I will explain here shortly.

It may take me a bit to get my thoughts together into a decent presentation, but I will do my best to have something for you within an hour or so.

Again, sorry for the delay.

Tim

Dubz, I completely undertsand your thoughts on this. I was there myself a few years ago.

I assure you, this is no scam. I will not be asking for money, nor will anyone else.

I will say this to explain things just a bit until I can get a more thourough post written.

What I am talking about requires nothing more than a little effort on your part, and your spare computer cycles.

OK folks. I will do my best to keep my explanation as clear as possible, but if I ramble just abit, please forgive me. If you have questions after reading this post, I will be more than happy to answer them. :-)

What I was referring to is called Distributed Computing. For those that don't know what that is, I will try to give a brief explanation....

Let's say that you had a whole bunch of work to do on your computer, but you knew that your computer didn't have nearly enough power to work all the data that you have. What do you do??

One solution would be to split that data up into smaller, more workable units, and send one to your brother/sister's computer...maybe some to your neighbor....maybe some to the dude down the street. Now you would have many computers working on the same bunch of data, and not causing a whole lot of stress to any one of the computers working on it. That, in a nutshell is the whole idea behind Distributed Computing.

Out i the world today, there are many, many scientific projects that use D.C. to help them analyse data because they simply don't have enough " in house " computer power to do it themselves.

Up until a couple of years ago, linking together all the projects that need help with computing power was a big problem. That was, until the University of California at Berkely came up with a system called BOINC ( Berkely Open Infrastructure for Network Computing ). The BOINC program is a simple downloadable program that links many of the D.C. projects together. Using the BOINC system, scientific projects can use 100's of thousands of home computers to help them analyze the data that they use to look for anything from cures for diseases, to gravity waves in space, to a way to stop the spread of Malaria, to finding a cure for cancer, AIDS and any number of other diseases that plague human kind.

This is no scam. The only thing you need to do is download the BOINC program, attach to the Humanitarian project of your choice....and just let it run.

The really good thing about BOINC is that it can be set to only use your computer cycles when the computer is idle. Basically, it will use the processor when you aren't.

I know some people may think that something like this is too good to be true, but it really is that easy. Not only is it something really easy to do,but it also gives you the opportunity to help mankind in many different ways.

I won't post the link to BOINC in here because technically it could be considered a commercial advertisement and I don't want to run afoul of the rules here. I like this place, and I like the people here. I just wanted people to know that there are ways they can help others, without having to donate money to this, that, and the other.

I have been involved in D.C. for about 4 years and it's something that I am pretty passionate about. A lot of people say that one person can't make a difference. I happen to disagree with that. I happen to know a way that one person CAN make a difference.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you want the link to the BOINC program, or perhaps ned me to explain something a little more, I will be more than happy to do so. Just drop me a line.

Thanks everyone.

Tim

Not really. You can check it out here:

http://folding.stanford.edu/

Although do stay away from the beta versions...they tend to mess up a lot.

Actually, Folding@home is a non BOINC based project. But the idea is sdtill the same.

@ LRH No....no risk to your computer at all.

Excellent!! drinker

Never hurts to spread the word. :-)

Hell..I even started a team when the only project I was running was SETI@home.

Now we have over 50 projects covered. Including Folding, which is running as we speak....lol

Never said it was. But they do similar work and explain what they do on their homepage. Hence the "You can check it out here:"

No worries. Just letting people know that even though the concept is the same, we were talking about something slightly different. :-)

Folding@home ( as you know ) is a stand alone project. I was referring to the BOINC based ones. Although both styles are looking to do the same things.
