what do you do to recapture their memory?

I was thinking about my grandmother today and don't have my tin of marbles and jacks or the teddy and raggedy anne that I kept at her place. When I'm traveling, these things are not with me. If I were back home I would dig out my favorite marbles and remember the games we played together. flowerforyou

I have so many of my grandparents, aunts, uncles, special people's touches around my home, they are so special to me, special memories. But the most special things are in my heart...you carry those with you everywhere...no matter where you go...flowerforyou

Are you familar with the song by Sara Evan's....I am Rosemary's Granddaughter...

If I live to be a hundred
And never see the seven wonders
That'll be alright
If I don't make it to the big leagues
If I never win a Grammy
I'm gonna be just fine
Cause I know exactly who I am

I am Rosemary's granddaughter
The spitting image of my father
And when the day is done my momma's still my biggest fan
Sometimes I'm clueless and I'm clumsy
But I've got friends that love me
And they know just where I stand
It's all a part of me
And that's who I am...

I miss my grandmother as well. I have so many memories of her, they pop up all the time. If all else fails, I have a picture of her on my mantle that brings it all back. I love telling my daughter stories about her great grandma too.

That's so true! I guess I just like getting my hands on it and often other memories come flooding back when I do...probably why I enjoy doing it. flowerforyou

I have deep deep family roots...
~my paternal granpa died before I was born, but I have his work hat hanging on a hook by my back door, his suspenders, a pair of his jeans, a lot of his hand tools from the early 1900s, saws, drills, hammers, handmade tools that are absolutely priceless to me
~my paternal gramma died when I was 5, I have a quilt she made me in my dining room, her treadle sewing machine, her sewing basket, her mixing bowls, some kitchen utensils, her ice box, her doilies, her plant stands, her flower pots, her iris', her roses, her hollyhocks
~my maternal grandmother passed when I was 10, I have her mixing bowls, her kitchen utensils, her recipes, her aprons, her linens, her hymnals, her sheet music, her honeysuckle, her lilac bushes, her rocking chair she rocked my mother and aunt and uncles in as babies, her kitchen stool she sat on every day peeling potatoes
~my maternal grandfather passed when I was 11, I have his work boots, his work hat, his foot stool, a steering wheel off an old tractor, a set of harness from his draft horse team, horse collars, saddles

I know they are all just things, but they all bring back such warm memories of their day to day lives, things they touched with their beautiful hands while caring for their families, my parents....us grandchildren. flowerforyou

I agree with that

I look up at the sky....It reminds me of my mom for some reason.

I love heirlooms! My sister and I have many from my maternal Grandmother, but few from her husband who died when my mother was just a child. After he died, grandma removed all the buttons from his garments and put them in a tin. When I was a child I cut a button off my dress and added it, and since then we add our own buttons to it on occasion. I hope we always have a tin of family buttons for generations.

I don't honestly know .. my mommy died when I was 18 and we have no video or anything of her. I don't remember her voice, or mannerisms or behavorial patterns.

I DO get out my treasures from school cuz her handwriting is there and pics of Christmas cookies we'd all frost together .. stuff like that.

It probably started with about 200 of Grandpas buttons and now probably has over 400 from all of us here now. My grandmother would quilt from our old dresses and throw all the buttons from them into it. So there are many from each of us. I can still recall the dresses my buttons came from and have the quilts with the material from them...well all but my wedding quilt. biggrin

Sorry to hear it (((Fade)))! My mother was 10 or 11 and her sister just a toddler. They don't remember their dad either. They only have a dozen b/w pics of him in uniform, and only one where they are in the pic with him. frown I spose that's what makes his buttons so special. flowerforyou

I've taken my mother's old house dresses and made quilts for each of us kids and grandkids...Mother passed a little over a year ago and it's nice to have them to cuddle under.

Mom made afghan after afghan all her life (she was in a wheelchair in her later years) and right after she passed the younger grandkids wanted to wrap up in her afghans and 'feel her hugging them'. flowerforyou

We have so many family pictures, from so many generations, tintypes...thankfully, now put on DVD and copied for all...
so thankful I come from a long line of packrats!!

Letters kept in bundles wrapped in ribbons! Postcards from the mid 1800s...their handwriting is a treasure to me.
