For the past week or so my children and I have been feeling unwell, we put it down to the warm weather, then last Monday we woke up to the news that our drinking water is contaminated with cryptosporidium and we were advised to boil all water, even water used in the preparation of food until further notice. 250,000 people have been affected by this, the water company are trying to fight off claims from those who have been severely ill. To say there are a lot of scared, angry and disgruntled people in our town is the understatement of the year. If you were in this position what would you do?

Submit my water for testing. Send all bills and loss of income associated with the occurrence to the utility for indemnification. If no result in a timely manner, get the company to disclose it's general liability insurer and contact them for a claim. Don't know if that's how it works there, but it's the usual here.

Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal disease caused by microscopic parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium. Both the disease and the parasite are commonly known as "Crypto."

Many species of Cryptosporidium exist that infect humans and a wide range of animals. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it very resistant to chlorine disinfection.

While this parasite can be transmitted in several different ways, water is a common method of transmission and Cryptosporidium is one of the most frequent causes of waterborne disease (drinking water and recreational water) among humans in the United States.

Oh, I know exactly what it is, the galling thing about it is, a year ago while I was at University ( studying Human and Molecular Biology) we had to run samples of the water from the reservoir from which our water supplies comes from ( we also recycle water in our town) We found that very nearly all of the water samples taken from the treatment works and the reservoir contained traces of impurities and were told by our biology tutor we should be careful of the water in the future, he said it would only take a hot summer to incubate whatever was growing in the bottom of the storage tanks to multiply.........And so it did, he was right and I sent him an email yesterday !

My daughter is suffering more than my son, because she keeps forgetting and still uses tap water for brushing her teeth ( and she is about to be qualified as a dental nurse!) noway

You would expect this sort of thing to happen in an under developed country, wouldn't you?
