My 15 yr old daughter is going to visit her father and sister at the end of the week. She just called to ask/tell me that she wants to get her septum or her labret (chin/bottom lip) pierced. I told her I am against getting the septum done because she has breathing problems now as it is.

Has anyone heard of damage caused by getting the labret done? Like to teeth or gums?

Well I do know it can cause damage to the teeth since it rubs against the front of the teeth. But not only that.. it looks gross and one day when she realizes she made a mistake she'll have a hole left as well.

She has a tendency to break out with coldsores on her lip when she gets sick and I don't want to see it get infected. And I brought up about the teeth.

i used to have my labret done and it caused me no problems. i also have several friends with both piercings and they have no problems either.

the biggest thing i would worry about is infection but they will tell her how to take care of it. so as long as she follows the advice she will be fine.

i think the labret is very sexy...my son had his done...and he's a huge wimp when it comes to needles...i went w/him and fully expected him to chicken out...he has to take it out for work though...i keep trying to talk my dad who'll be 70 next month and looks 50 into getting his pierced...he'd look really good w/it...but he says he doesn't need to be pierced or tatted to be cool...lol...if i was young i'd have everything (almost) pierced...

My 17 yr old has her "snake bites" and has big gauge earrings in her ears, but she put these neon green spikes in her bites and they look gross, at least the younger one agrees with me on that. She said she will only put small ones in, if she can get them.

I have my bottom lip done an the only thing I had wrong with it was bitting down on it.. which hurts soooo bad an chiped my tooth a little but it she gets a hoop or something she wont have this prob.. if she does get it done.. make sure she cleans it 3-4 times a day!! I used dail soap to clean mine... if she wants to get it let her...let her live her life.. oo an if she does not like it when she gets older.. the hole will close.. drinker

Thanks for your replies, everyone.......I told her if she feels she really wants one she can get her labret done but no bull ring in her nose....those I just can't stand. She is too beautiful to get that done, in my opinion anyway.

With my kids I have made the rule that they can't have anything other than their ears pierced until they are 18(no gauges), as well as no tats until then. I have not problem with either piercings or tats, I just don't feel that teenagers can think through all of the possible future repercussions. They don't know what their career is going to be, and it can affect future jobs. If she does get it pierced I would just make sure that she does a good job of keeping it clean.

I'm with you on that. My daughter bugged me to no end to get her nosed pierced. I stuck to my guns and she waited until she was 18. Luckily no of the shops in MS will do piercings or tatts without parental consent under the age of 18. I say to each his own but they need to be abit older before they make those kinds of decisions. Alot can change within just a couple years. At 15 they are still just starting to explore who they are.

My son had it done...but he had to let it grow back because it was messing with his front teeth. It does rest on your bottom teeth, and it messes with the enamel. I was actually glad that he decided it wasn't worth ruining his beautiful teeth over!! bigsmile

My sons have "tats", that I cried over, though my second one's are small and hidden. I think you ladies are awesome, for your acceptance. flowerforyou

Id let her do it. My advice: Make her wait 6 months (or until an upcoming birthday/special occasion...if she still wants it...let her.)6 months is forever when youre a teen, but resonable. Making her wait until she is 18...most likely she wont. I did it myself at age 16, honestly...and I wish I would have had a professional do it. I never had any problems with it (breathing or chipped teeth)....thats more common with getting your tongue pierced. Having a pro will help with making sure she gets the right jewelery (and not safety pins like I didlaugh )

Thats your opinion, how it "looks". I got my eyebrow pierced and now 8 years later I still love it...and Ive never had anyone tell me i look GROSSlaugh

But, NO...IT DOES NOT RUB AGAINST YOUR TEETH. I DO KNOW, I HAD IT DONE! The jewelery is flat on the back and rests on the gumline. The chances of it hurting your gums is the same as if anyone had bridge work or braces. Metal touching your gums wont hurt your gums or enamel.
When I took mine out it did NOT leave a hole or scar. (I took it out because I was in contact sports)

I think that's a bit of a close-minded way of looking at it; who's to say that it might not be a good thing. Many people look better with piercings; it just depends upon how much the person has looked at how it will fit in with their overall apearance.

I have had my 2 facial piercings for over 10 yrs and have never once thought that it was a mistake. I figure if anyone thinks that they can't talk to me because of facial piercings they would have ended up nitpicking something else if I didn't have them and they are the kind of people who are nothing but bitter, prejudiced, wastes of time.
