Topic: do you punish your kids if | |

somebody has to do something the "dumb" kids are driving the schools down maybe it is the dumb teachers personally I think it's the parents that fail to see they too have an active part in their child's education. many sit back and only rely on the school system. become involved in your childrens education. jmo dont think there are dumb teachers per se, but teachers that are overwhelmed, over worked, underpaid, etc. |

I totally agree too that parents need to get more involved, I see it too much around where I live and I feel so sorry for the children because the parents are just sorry.

I have 3 children and they all have/had different study habits.
My oldest wouldnt even pick up a book, the night before a test and he would get straight A's ,but my other children would study half the night and get B's or C's. As long as they are trying,I am going to praise them for whatever grade they get. |

they get a grade of a c on the report card my parents never did when i was in school but now i hear that parents actually ground there kid if there not getting A's and B's and the worst ive heard is the kid has to get straight A's or there grounded honestly i think thats wrong Studies have shown that children will, on average, meet their parents expectations. If you expect your child to make C's, then your child will make C's. Parents that expect straight A's have kids who will usually make straight A's. Expecting more from your children isn't child abuse, it's preparing them for a world where C students usually end up in dead end jobs. The children with A's probably had parents that worked with them. I would never pressure my child to get straight A's. That is terrible pressure to be perfect. I do have a straight A child that suddenly was getting a C in Math. I just asked the teacher for more hand-outs. My child got a B. I am lucky that my child does well. But...I would never pressure or stress my child out to achieve that. I don't want my child to be "perfect". I want my child to try their best and also be a happy child that participates in sports and other activities outside of school. |

i can agree with the lack of parent involvement but not with the under paid part and yes there are dumb teachers i met a few of them and yes the teachers are overworked and many are overwhelmed but what causes the overwhelming (think about it) I do believe teachers are not paid their worth, while there are some that give the rest a bad rep, I have had the pleasure in meeting and befriending plenty of teachers and do for a fact know that some/most have to go into their own pockets for supplies and do so unselfishly. overwhelmed due to class sizes, fear, unruly children, aggressive parents, etc... |

If they do get lower than a "C" though, they are either not trying and should be punished or they need a little extra help and should get a tutor or something. |

The spelling and syntax were almost always pathetic - and these people were supposed to be teaching my children the fundamentals of the English language? Puh-leeeeze! |

while channel surfing last night a first grade teacher missed a third grade grammer question on smarter than a fifth grader
good thing she does not teach 3rd grade hhhhmmmmmmmm and yes i got it correct -- sometimes i even surprise myself |

I was grounded practically all from the age of 12 to 18 for my grades in school. This did not encourage me to excel, but frustrated me and caused me to rebel even worse. I think that a parents involvement in academics is what will help. It's easy to ground and punish. It takes a bit more effort to get the root of the problem and fix it. Talk to your kids, there is usually an underlying issue involved with grades dropping like that. Or that they put their best effort forth and just happen to be average in that particular subject.

I rewarded her for good grades; never punished for bad ones. I helped with homework in terms of helping her to understand her work; always made her do her own projects - she was the only 5th grader whose projects did not look professional - always had communication with all of her teachers.
She was an honor student right up until the time she stopped going to school, 6 weeks before her high school graduation. You can't control everything. |
