No it is speculated based off the Mayan Calendar, however it is not completely true as it is the year the calendar ends not necessarily the year the world ends. Several meteorologist predictions say that we will be hit with several terrible weather storms in the coming years (i.e., Hurricane Katrina) which all lead up to about 2012...however all is theory until it comes true.
