Topic: Driving in South Africa | |

hello all, I'm wondering if anybody here has rented a car and driven across South Africa. Well I'm looking at SA, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia. South Africa I hear is going a bit crazy right now but I'm not leaving for a while yet so hopefully it will calm down. I was thinking of using about thirty days to travel through all the countries I mentioned. i've heard a lot of car jacking tales in Mozambique though. what was it like crossing the borders! Should I look at just booking onto an overland tour. i have read about a couple of them that go through the countries I was looking at. I would rather chase whims and sleep late though if you know what I mean. Cheers

LOL! One never knows and I don't make assumptions about people. I have actually run into some well travelled people on this site so I figured I would ask!

You'll see the hosts of a car show in the UK called "Top Gear" going on a rally from one point in Africa to another. That's all the edumacation you'll need about that stuff. |

I am going on Safari in Zimabwe the 29th. I think your right about the uncertain state of affairs. Driving in SA is probably not a good idea, at least not around cities or through Govt checkpoints. You might look into a tour service or hire a driver familiar with SA. Avoid crowds and populated areas. You may be best off going to a different country. Tanzania is nice. Mozambique is also nice. Any place is safer than Zim or SA in the southern countries. Look into coastal Mozambique.

Funny, I'm planning trip to SA next Aug & just booked my resort. I'm told a car is a 'must' in SA, at least in the Sun City area. Not sure about other countries you're going to, except I hear Zimbabwe is dicey. We're going to the Zambia side of Victoria Falls instead, but will fly from SA. If you get more info on driving in SA, please post & I'll do the same.

I have been to Jo'Burg and CapeTown and the Western Cape Mountains. Hiring a car in S.A. isn't the wisest thing to do (by yourself). It is best to have an Afrikaaner with you and/or Native Blacks (bodyguard types) who know the language and the terrain. Trains are that much safer. It was told to me, when I asked if I could drive up to Germany from Jo'burg - Yeah you can go anywhere you want - just don't open your mouth (being an american) that is a dangerous thing and there are more 'tribal wars" than you think. The struggle for freedom in S.A. has been won, but the war isn't over for personal/financial freedom. The infrastructure of S.A. is dismal. When they carjack there - they don't just take your car - they dispose of any evidential bodies with eyes that may be able to identify them, as well. South Africa is a beautiful place though -don't miss going, if you have the time and means (which most Americans do, but they spend their money on "stuff" instead)...go for it. Get to know some of the people first, but be careful who and how you meet them. S.A. can be a very dangerous place, and it can be the best place in the world - if you know the right folks. Have Fun.

Thanks for the insights, SB. We're staying at some top resorts, so I'm not too worried about meeting up with 'bad guys'. And, we've decided to do guided day trips. No driving around on our own! Can't wait!
