Are they truly important in a relationship? I've known many women that claim they need a man with good communication skills but once they find one they've no idea what to do with him. Suppose someone's non-verbal communication skills are much better than the verbal ones. Is that good enough?

I think you need to be able to hold a conversation with someone, be it serious or not so serious. Silence while nice at times, isn't always a good thing.

when someone is silent, they are usually communicating. it just takes someone to understand that. infact, the silent one might be saying a whole lot too!!!

It's really hard to have a good relationships with someone who "clams up" or isnt a great conversationalist.

Non-verbal communication skills.... Those are tough with these long distance internet relationships though, aren't they?

in my opinion, in the end, its not the distance that kills it, its much more than that. something more serious and important. but long distance communication is tough either way.

Communication between two people involves the all important LISTENING by both parties. Both can talk all day but if no one is listening to the feelings conveyed by the words then there really is no communication.
