While at work today I was doing what I do and checking people out. I mean not checking people out....but ringing up and taking their money. So, anyway....I got to work about 12:30 and around 2:45 or 3 I saw a piece of paper over in the corner of my area...I would look and notice it there over and over again til finally I was checking a lady out and decided I needed to move it because it was in the way of my clean area, and not good to look at where I was putting her things. So...I picked it up and was about to throw it away when I felt it wasn't merely trash. So as I picked it up I saw in it what looked like money. It was. It was a bank envelope with money in it. I saw 80 dollars in twenties.
So, I put it up while talking to my customer and making sure she wasn't gonna call back later and say it was hers; I told her I would ask anyone who called to give the four numbers related to the find. I called my manager a few times to my area and he never showed up. Anyway...I told another checker about it and she said I wouldn't tell anyone. I said I had too. I would hope that someone would be truthful with me. So....while I finally did talk to my manager in the back room, I told him my find. He said we were supposed to place it in the safe and wait. If someone did not call in a day or two it would be protocol to send it to the corporate office. I said huh uh...the finder should get to keep it, not the big company that already had more money than any of us. I asked him what he would do...he said honestly? I would pocket it after no one calls back. That most people will not think that someone would ever admit to finding cash mony. I told him that I was going to put it in an envelope and place the four numbers on it and if they called they would have to give me those. They would understand the numbers. He said they were not going to call. So far they have not. It turned out to be 100.00 in twenties. I have it in my purse right now in a sealed envelope. I will hold it for a few days. I am also going to tell my main manager and see what she says. I do not want to get fired for silly crap like this. We do afterall have cameras all over the place. What do ya think? Kat |

I already told them I will not leave it there. I ws told that the managers will just keep it. And, I am not going to let corporate have it. Why would I? They have millions.
I am keeping it sealed and with me til and if someone calls. I feel safer with it on me. I am not spending it. It had no name on it. But, I do have four numbers that will tell me if it theirs. Kat |

review the vid It is broken inside the store to view there. Besides it is where it would be literally impossible to know who dropped it. What we have is a camera meister from another state that views us all simultaneously in all the stores. Video will not help the loser, it could convict me if I were to try and keep it from someone that was looking for it. I am not trying to keep it from the rightful owner, just not giving it to someone who has no bearings on the situation. Kat |

You may want to review with the managers what actually happens with found money.
I"m a manager for a large corporation as well. Our policy does have us deposit the money but if not claimed within 30 days we do a payout for the amount to the employee who found it. Might not hurt to ask |

I asked that very question. I was told it was supposed to be sent straight to corporate and they do with it what they do with it. But, that the employee never sees it. Kat |

If you found it on the street and gave it to the police you would probably get it back if nobody claimed it, or at least a reward if they did. Since it was in your store you have to follow store policy. I would ask the manager to find out what corporate does with the money. IMO they have no right to keep it. If policy says they collect it, then after a reasonable period of time it should be given to some deserving charity. You should suggest that a policy like this be implemented corporation wide if it does not already exist.

You are right about Big business, I was a manager for several different Corps. and bottom line is they are out to make money anyway possible, and screw the little guy, even if they are an employee. |

I don't understand why you just can't go over both manager's heads and call the corporate office yourself? Then you can find out for sure what the real policy is and take it from there.

hmm
keeping your job may be paramount... i would donate it to a charity.... but now it is the safe...soon to sent to corporate.... i would ask them to donate it to a charity....as for your manager breaking policy and telling you to take it home.....well .......he obviously not trustworthy... The road to hell is paved with good intentions |

I can only tell you what happened to me one day. I stopped at a bank and cashed my paycheck. I stood off to the side and counted the money. I counted it 3 times and all 3 times I was 100.00 over. I walked back to the teller and handed her the money and told her. She counted the money and agreed she had gave me 100 to much. She began crying and saying she had a lot of personal things going on and thanked me over and over. I left there and went to a restaurant to eat. When I finished I left the money for my meal and the waitresses tip on the table. As I was getting in my car I hear the waitress yelling at me to stop. She runs over to me and hands me my wallet. It was on the seat in the booth I had been sitting at. Not one dime was missing even though it was a lot of money (remember I had just cashed my check). I handed her 20 bucks which she refused at first but I insisted. Anyeway if I hadn't given that bank teller back her 100 dollars I am very sure I would have never seen my wallet again either.

I worked for a large chain, and a manager got fired for taking money from the safe that was "found" and had been there for almost a year.
I'd do what your boss says, companies are funny that way. |
