I can only tell you what happened to me one day. I stopped at a bank and cashed my paycheck. I stood off to the side and counted the money. I counted it 3 times and all 3 times I was 100.00 over. I walked back to the teller and handed her the money and told her. She counted the money and agreed she had gave me 100 to much. She began crying and saying she had a lot of personal things going on and thanked me over and over. I left there and went to a restaurant to eat. When I finished I left the money for my meal and the waitresses tip on the table. As I was getting in my car I hear the waitress yelling at me to stop. She runs over to me and hands me my wallet. It was on the seat in the booth I had been sitting at. Not one dime was missing even though it was a lot of money (remember I had just cashed my check). I handed her 20 bucks which she refused at first but I insisted. Anyeway if I hadn't given that bank teller back her 100 dollars I am very sure I would have never seen my wallet again either.

Amen MBD, AMEN! I believe in this karmic stuff. Ever notice how the people who are a-holes ALWAYS end up in misery - even when they have physical comforts, money, et al?

Whatever happens after making a choice isn't relly relevant. The choice we make is what continues to determine who we are.
Place a non-negotiable price on your personal conscience.

I totally had the same 'what goes around comes around' experience in Italy a couple months ago ... found a purse on the airplane and rushed it to the flight attendant cuz I knew someone would be looking for it and in a panic.

Fast forward to my FIRST day in Rome ... unknowningly left my wallet at a convenience stand FULL of Euros, credit cards, Cdn $, the whole she-bang -- 20 minutes later and a mile down the road, I see this woman scouring the stream of tourists eating lunch outside, scanning madly up and down -- with my wallet in her hands. I had NO idea it was missing and this gracious, honest, angel of a store clerk had left her post and spent a good chunk of her time and energy to find me in a crowded plaza. I was so humbled and grateful (and feeling like a world-class IDIOT for being so careless!!) - she wouldn't take a dime from me ... but I know she'll be rewarded by the universe somehow. Lessons like that stay with you a long, long time ... ohwell

I totally agree with this, is the pass it on theory. It still belongs to the person who left it there even if they dont claim it, but since you didnt pocket it from day one, you deserve something, though i think the pleasure of being honest should be payment enough, but i know that doesnt count much these days.

I am honest, that is why I am holding the money myself, because I know many are not. I want this money returned to the rightful owner. I have also found and searched for people that I have found their belongings to.
I NEED money so bad that you do not know! But, my conscience wants this money returned. It matters not to me that my house payment is behind...what matters to me is seeing a happy look on someones face when they get their money back.
I have returned wallets, purses and even found a emerald and diamond ring once and took it to upper management with witnesses to hold until someone came looking for it. I wanted witnesses at the place to keep each other honest. I was told that people like me should be rewarded for the honesty.

Would I like to keep the money? Yes. But....I WANT IT RETURNED TO THE RIGHT PERSON.
