that is suppose to be the ideal situation. the problem comes when ego and vanity enters into the game, by either side (just to make it clear it can be either man or woman, not attacking or supporting either side).
The problem is human nature when one party wants to dominate over the other.
When people just don't get the concept of the equality of the partnership known as relationship or marriage (whatever it is).
So when all this stupidity comes into place we have divorces and people changing couples.
I believe that a strong friendship should lead to a strong relationship, and this should lead to strong marriage.
I think that friendship is the one which needs to last the longest, so the individuals involved have enough time to know each other, and see if they actually fit.
However, this is just the utopic idea of what should be.
Human nature will always be human nature.
