I'm dog and house sitting. The internet connection is a high speed connection that goes from modem to tower. No router, no fancy network stuff.

So I brought over my computer. Set it up next to theirs, and just unplugged the internet cable and plugged it into my tower. Seemed simple enough.

Apparently not. Since it wouldn't work. It couldn't give my computer an IP address so it couldn't connect me to the internet. I'm so bummed. I wanted to play wow with some friends while I was house sitting and feeding the dogs.

Is there something I need to change on my computer so it will work? Since at home, I was going though a router?

Most likely their IP address is going to be the only one recognized by their modem. If you did change it, then their pc wouldnt work on on it anymore

If they had a router, it would be a different story

All you need to do is when you plug the Ethernet cable if they have one pluging into there pc, unplug that and plug it into your's, then on the back of there modem there should be a reset part to it, you will most likely need a pin to push in and it will reset the modem to work for your pc, then when your done hook it back up to there's do the same thing so the modem goes back to there network.

yep...reboot.....reboot...router and pc....should be fine.......

love the new photo

Just reset the router and it should work, then reset it again when you plug it back into there computer. Just unplug it for a few seconds so it resets then plug it back in and you should be good to go, do the same thing when your done using there router and hooking it back to there pc.

The modem can be set to give your PC it's IP address OR serve as a passthrough.

You said you could not give your PC an IP address??
Try setting your NIC to 'Obtain', allowing the modem to serve as DHCP if it's set to do so.

Caution on resetting the modem first -- if you're on DSL, . . . if the account information gets cleared you may need to re-enter it all

Well, the modem has the button for active or stand by. But no reset button. I don't think I'll mess to much with it. I don't want to screw anything up. I might be into gaming, But I'm a sci-fi geek. Not a computer one. And I really want to smash some mobs right now. Oh well.

Then first things first - discovery:

GO to your Control Panel\Network Connections
Make sure your NIC is not 'Disabled'
Right click and select 'Enable' if it is.

If that doesn't do it
Right click and select Properties
In the list you'll see TCP/IP Internet Protocol. Double click on it. Select 'Obtain...' in both sections.

See if that does it for you.
