Twenty-One Gun Salute
An honorable funeral For a man well respected, Of an untimely death That was so unexpected. He served his country With the US Air Force, And took care of his own Mostly of course. The trumpeter sounds out taps As the casket is lowered into the ground, The rifles square off their salute With a deafening sound. With each round of seven I shudder to hear, The twenty one rounds They slowly bring fear. A tear comes to my eyes As the casket finally stops, Closure finally comes As the rope finally drops. The skies open up As he's accepted up above, Leaving behind all those That embraced his love. |

The last verse was so beautiful I can't even start to try to describe it with words....the very best poet is one who needs not explain, but only to hear what the heart saw....
