I started talking to the cool coworker of mine. He was faxing something near my desk and told me that Van Halen was playing here and that he was going to go see them. I commented on how that was cool, but that I didn't know much of Van Halen's stuff, only the popular songs.

Then he asked me what my favorite band was and said he got the vibe that I was into rock and metal. I told him I was and that my favorite band was "Nine Inch Nails."

Now, I love Nine Inch Nails, but it's not my favorite band. I only said that because I think that's the only band I like that he would know of so we could talk more.

you dont have to like the same stuff to be attracted to one another...if anything it gives you individualty and when you chat you talk and learn about new stuff..plus its good to have your own interests and hobbies..if music comes up again discuss the other bands you like..he will respect you more for it

I don't think what you did was horrible because you actually like him and you also actually like Nine inch nails....if he likes them too, then you automatically found common ground and a group you both like a lot and now have that in common.It would be different say if you didn't like metal/grunge or anything at all.Then you would have been flat lying just for a date.
