Sucks monkey nuts!!!
normally i'll stick up for Linux based OS's but not this time!.i spent over 6 hours trying to get it to install and finally i gave up.the first 5 hours it kept freezing up at 52% of the installation, finally got it installed and then when i tried logging in,the screen would turn an orange color after the log in and then it would reboot and do the same thing over again. after about the 20th reboot,i said f*** Ubuntu!.yes i did check the disk for error and none were found.my system is compatable.Ubuntu just sucks! |

I've worked on PC's(Microsoft) for 20+ years...I still have one, because I still work on them for customers, and I also have a Mac...which...If I could have only one...I'd have to chunk the PC, and guard my Mac with my life. Nothing better. There is a learning curve involved if you been with Microsoft for a while...but you can do it, and will be willing to bet you to be glad you did. Good luck. |

Just a note of info: There are over 100+ operating systems available. FreeSpire and the others are good to play with, and to operate if need be...and it is a good learning experience...I commend you for wanting to venture into other OS's. So, find one you like. That is how I got started in the Mac's, by installing other Linux systems...trying to get away from the WinXP. So, good luck...and happy installing. |

That reminds me of the first 2 times I tried to install Redhat 6.2. The 3rd time was the charm, and that junk computer I installed it on made me a linux convert. These days, my customers have versions from 6.2 all the way to Fedora 4, but with the latest kernel. Were it not for the laptops I've purchased with an operating system I never used, Micro$oft wouldn't have made a penny on me. |

I've had no problems with ubuntu. I've ran versions 5.04 upwards. I've installed it on both laptops /w wireless and PCs. However its not really my prefered distro. I like to run either Damn Small Linux or Sabayon. Depending on if I want a fancy GUI or not. You could also go with plain debain. If you want a real headache try running XP64 bit or worse anything with Vista lol

well i was able to get Freespire 2.0 installed and got it connected to the net.i really like it but i can't get my graphics driver installed,so all the letters are small and hard to read but other than that,it seems pretty good for new Linux users

ok if anyone knows Freespire really well, please message me if you use yahoo messenger and i'll give you my yahoo id cause i need someone to talk me through some things on here

Try some of the other Linux distros, like SuSE Linux (which was recently bought out by Novell Corporation), which is supposedly rock solid (at the expense of a slight lack of user-friendliness), or the old stand-by... Red Hat Linux. The larger Linux distro developers tend to have better support and (in SOME cases) do a better job at updating their software and stuff.

well where i'm having issues is with installing things.they show up in my downloads but when i try to install them,it doesn't do anything and my graphics card driver is showing up as a binary

Try backtrack 3...custom and preloaded "network security tools" or hack your neighbor ha!

I've installed older versions of ubuntu on many systems, and never had a problem, BUT i have heard a LOT of complaints about the latest version of ubuntu.
So suppose canonical messed up the latest one particular version of ubuntu - the great news is: you only have 6 months to wait for their next (presumably much improved) release! Its not like Vista, for which we all waited YEARS, many are disappointed, and how long will it be till the next version of windows? Oh, and also completely unlike windows - if you don't like the latest ubuntu, you can just use another variety of linux, like PCLinuxOS or straight debian or Linux Mint. |
