Topic: Flying her in from England

Well I have met someone I really like but she lives in England. We have been talking for about 2 weeks now and we both want her to come visit me here in FL. HOWEVER, perhaps I am a cynic, but I am concerned about being scammed. Here is what I have come up with to prevent such a thing. Tell me what you think. We will split the airfare, I will give the money directly to her travel agent not her. But my concern is, and this may just be paranoia, but how do know it isn't a friend and really a travel agent? I will have to either send a cashier's check or give my credit card number to the agent. So any suggestions as to how to protect my ass without coming across to her that I don't trust her. I want to move forward yet keep my eyes wide open.

a good start migh be her name, if she is on the forums, etc. I would be suspicious

...am I hearing you correct...Rob ...you dont think the women whom post on these forums are trust worthy...but we are good enough to call friend, I would be disappointed if I did not already know you are a Cancer and a cynic...from a astrological stand point more has been written of the dishonesty/false witness of the sign Cancer than of any of the others...does that mean this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black...

...as a police officers daughter I would upfront ask for all any pertinent information and offer the same, if she is insulted...she is living in the dark ages....being a lady and being disclosing of fact are apples and oranges...is there really such a thing as too careful, naw...too paranoid yes...self protective is your responsibility...

There are 2 things you can't teach someone. Experience and intelligence. Odds are, you're being scammed. You may have to experience it. However, if you purchase a ticket for her, at minimum, make it a non-reimbursable and non-exchangable ticket, so that at least if she doesn't follow through she can't take your half.

Half. What is it about that word that scares the living fecal matter out of every male, anyway? noway

Ok and i'm sure someone said something like this already. Two weeks and going to split the Airfare? if you want to really know if it's real or not. Have her give you the travel agents info and before you do anything look it up and find out if it's a real business. And as most think. I would think it's a scam.

If you really want to see this girl...go for it!! You are only paying for half of it, so isn't it worth that to take a chance on love? My God everyone on here is so sure that everyone is a scammer!!! Good God people, there are honest people out there!! Maybe they decided to split the cost?
Be honest, did she ask you to split the cost or did you offer? I know when I flew to New Zealand to see the man of my dreams, I paid my own way. BUT he had just left my house and he had paid his own way to see me...so it was only fair that we each pay our own way. BUT each of us paid for the food when the other one was there. It all worked out in the end and no-one got scammed at all. We both took a chance and it was well worth it!!
Sometimes in life you have to take a chance, sure it doesn't work out every time BUT what if this is that one chance it does work out?? I say go for it and stop worrying so much!!! Enjoy your friend and see where it goes!! Be smart about it, get her name and pass it on to friends just in case. Good Luck flowerforyou

Check the travel agent through the Better Business Bureau and make sure the phone number and adress match the information you have been given.

Just an update. My friend in Scotland called London information for me and got the number of the travel agency, it is a real business. Though they never heard of the agent that contacted me. After telling her this, and offering to reimburse her once she arrived, all she said was that she was disappointed in what had happened. There was no, "oh, what agency did you call, here is the right number" or any such thing said in her own defense. So being cautious just saved me $300. The cheapest round trip from London to Orlando is just about $600. on USair, FYI.

But, funny how things work out. There is this local girl that I have been interested in for a while. Her I know and have spoken to for about 3 months now. But things seemed to be going no where. She works long hours and it is difficult for us to get together. Then I started noticing that I was always the one calling her. She would often say she would call, then not do it. So I spoke with her on Sunday night and she was busy at work and said she would call me Monday. I asked if she was really going to do it this time. Well Monday came and went with no phone call. So I kind of "got the hint". Well just after I found all this out about Miss England my phone rings and it is Miss Florida. We are finally going to go out on a "real" date this coming Wednesday. This woman is quite special and there is the possibility of long term with her. So as I usually say, things tend to work out the way they are supposed to.

See you in the forums.

I had never put out "mrs. dependable" as you call her. I just thought that she was not that interested. I am 41 not 14 and am not "going steady" with anyone. I was hoping to have a nice week with Ms. England, I didn't say she was coming to marry me. Alisa, Mrs Dependable, however has the potential for more than just a few dates. There are some other, unmentioned, situations that have to be overcome before we can move forward anyhow. Nothing bad, just time related...

Actually not really a cynic but after so many years of seeing nice people get ripped off by one kind of scam or another in the social work field you tend to smell a rotten apple when it bobs to the top too fast. Having been on line for over twentyfive years I have seen some really nice people go down in flames over Long Distance Relationships and it isn't always the really lamo stupid desperate people you might think. What it is is people who go against their inner voice that tells them "hey hold up here". Too often they want to believe they are going to meet somone who lets them "shine" as a nice person, or get something with out really working for it. Most people want to say at least once they did something just a little spontaneous and romantic even a little exciteing or maybe dangerous. Con artists count on that. They also count on the fact that most men will be too embarrassed to admidt they have been played, assaulted, or infected until they are long gone. What is sad once you are marked as a "pidgeon" sometimes you can get played more than once. The EASIEST person to run a con on is someone who thinks they are smarter than the Con artists. True they are not always the brightest people but they often refine and repeat their craft and work in packs so it is easy to look innocent. Like the travel agency? Something is fishy there and I doubt it is only Friday Lunch. Someone got nervous you were checking around and closed ranks leaving Miss England to fend for herself because she could more easily move her resience than to move a business. I would be curious to see how many complaints are actually looged with the public officials. As far as the BBB I wouldn't put much stock in them; for two-hundred bucks pretty much anyone can join. All they have to do is register a new business name that has no complaints against it or buy out an old business name that has been members for years to "look legit". In the USA each state has sa Staste Atorney General Fraud Division and commerce and licenseing board but I am not sure how things go in England. If you got ripped off there perhaps our embassy could refer you but again that is a little too late. If you want to mess around with long distance relationhips you need to have a lot of time and energy and money to check people out. If you can not afford to vacation together, transfer one or the other of you into a short term living situation such as summer school, a sesasonal employment, internship, or some kind of sabstical chances are you are going to have a very different day to day relationship than what you are expecting.

PacificStar,

Actually, I was smarter than she was, and I prevented myself from getting ripped off. I have not always been the nice sweet guy I am today. I ran away from home when I was 13 and lived basically on the streets of Greenwich Village (east side). I learned a LOT from that experience and was able to not only detect the scam but prevented myself from being taken in by it. Damm, she was cute, but then again I don't even know whose pics those were that were sent to me. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but then again I am no fool either.

James
