Have a weekly spelling bee with age appropriate words. All participants get some type of reward. (treat, popsicles, etc) The winner for that week gets to be the teachers assistant or classroom leader. - collects papers, hands out paperwork, etc

Have a daily story read orally row by row of students. They read one sentence. Next student reads the next.. until the short story is read.

Have the group make a adlib story using numbers. You give them the first sentence. Each student adds a sentence using a number until the story is complete by adding/subtracting the number each student uses.

So your rewarding thier work and accomplishments. Implementing leadership in a fun environment. Giving them confidence reading aloud while making sure they are all paying attention.

Nickers, don't you remember being six?

Make learning fun! The key is not to make it look like learning. laugh

I went to Catholic school - we had NO fun

That's the truth!! We lived in terror of the "black robes and hats" and also the pointer and ruler!! laugh laugh

at that age kids love hands on learning....let them figure things out with lots of visuals let them figure things out by them counting blocks, putting letters together, making up there own stories and letting them be a part of the lesson planning.....they feel proud to be part of the learning process and they will love you for it....

Maybe not m&ms....pretzels, popcorn, fruit loops, let them bring something from home......"show and Tell" then them tell about something they have in home to share with there friends and you!!! Great confidence builder.....

Bring that great sense of humout that we see on here too...flowerforyou

This class is for first graders who didn't pass their state assesments in Math and reading. Damn you President Bush

Not to drag this perfectly good thread into politics... But doesn't anyone else see the irony in this statement?

Might I suggest a game called

'Are you smarter then the President?'

My son is first grade and loves when they do food math with like jelly beans or make a snack using apples like we have 10 apples and if I cut three up and split them up how many do we have for each person..As far as his reading he is in the gifted class for that and he is now reading chapter books...But he likes to make his own stories and tell them to the class or when the whole class makes a story, , everyone can give an idea, then everyone helps write the book...I know my son is a hands on learner better then sitting at a desk he gets bored so easy...

Jist - the reason the kids are not passing is because they can't speak English, and yes I see the irony

I like the idea of having them write their own story - I will have to check on the policy about using food for Math because I know 2 yrs. ago when I taught 8th graders no food was allowed in the classroom

Thank you, Danetteflowerforyou
