I just found out today that I will be teaching a 1st grade summer school class. The problem is for the last 7 years I have taught either 8th graders or college courses. I have gone online to read the state standards and outcomes so I know what they need to have accomplished by the end of their 4-week session and I have my syllabus developed BUT I need GAMES - How do I make it fun. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have been trying to think of what I liked to do in the first grade or what my kids enjoyed the most about that year but neither I nor they can remember. BTW I have talked ot other first grade teachers and they have told me there will be no time for FUN. I think that's bullshat. Ok let's hear it.....

When I was a kid, my teacher had us play this fun game... what was it called... oh yeah, stand in the corner!!!

1st grade??? Be prepared to spend most of your time wiping tears and noses and tying shoes!!!

Check out the early ed websites - there are tons of preschool/early ed activity suggestions appropriate for 5, 6 and 7-year olds. And if you're really stuck, I'll email you some of my old stuff! Also, learn LOTS of songs!!

have them play sardines its were someone hides. and they have to hide then the others go find them and have have too fit as many people in that one spot as they can. that is why its called sardines its a great game we play that at church some no joke

Go take a look at what Noggin and the likes of Sesame street are doing. Noggin has it's own channel and they're on 24/7.

Depends on what you're teaching. My mom taught kindergarten for over 30 years. If they were learning science, she would cook for them. For example, she would make them cranberry sauce to show how the heat melted down the berry. If you dont cook, make popcorn, teaching them how the conductivity of the heat causes the corn to pop and puff up. Kids love that.
