Topic: Movies that make me cranky. | |

Maybe I’m too picky. Maybe I’m too much of a purist. But the Nancy Drew movie coming out really annoys me.
They could have left the historical context of the stories. Or the could have gone with the completely contemporary version of her that came out in the 80’s abd 90’s. But no, the powers that be decided to go with a contemporary setting and an old fashioned girl. The reason this bothers me is that it seems to be saying the opposite of what Nancy Drew was all about. It seems to be trying to tell kids to be old fashioned. That it is okay to have old fashioned values and morals. Nancy Drew was a very forward thinking character. The first books were written in the 30’s. Nancy started out as a 16 year old and sorta got fixed in time as an 18 year old. She was just out of school, and her upper-middle class father could afford to buy her a car during the depression. In the very earliest stories, she was a gun toting, fast driving, 16 year old graduate. Even when the stories toned her down a bit and fixed her as a more middle class, more respectful, 18-year old, she still was just out of school, fast driving, and her boyfriend was a college student. Really, Nancy Drew was pointing forward to the whole women’s lib movement and was a confident, strong, “I can take care of myself” kind of gal. I even wonder if she didn’t play a hand at shaping the views of the young girls who hit their 20’s in the 60’s and 70’s and were demanding more equal treatment in the work place and in life in general. The fact that they are making her a rather dowdy, old-fashioned girl isn’t all that bothers me. The fact that they dropped a few years off of her age grates on my nerves as well. She clearly isn’t the kind of girl who is going to hop into her convertible to go pick up her friends and drive out to some remote location or decide to catch a plan to go visit her father on one of his travels. The trailers make her look like a Jr. High student. This is almost as bad as the Casper movie, where they decided the ghost of a three year old child really ought to be a young teen heart-throb instead. It seems that Hollywood, in its inability to find original material, has to take beloved classics and completely destroy the magic of them in the search for a new hit. |

How dare Hollywood include a moral within a movie?!? And telling girls that they can be old fasioned (chaste, conservative, etc) and still be popular and sucessful? Do they know how many loser bosses won't be getting BJs in exchange for jobs over this?

Do they know how many loser bosses won't be getting BJs in exchange for jobs over this? I don't care if they put moral in it or not. But don't make it Nancy Drew. They are completely changing what Nancy Drew stood for. She was a progessive, modern girl, much ahead of her time. Now they are making her a backward direction and misrepresenting her. |

No, I think they are taking the original Nancy Drew and putting her into 2008. The original Nancy Drew would seem tame by todays standards. Would you prefer that she was having sex with guys? Or maybe women? Who would be the audience of the movie you want to see made? |
