I got a letter from the DOL a couple days ago saying that I am eligible for TAA retraining since my last job went to China. I was going in to apply for that today. (Trying to anyway.)

That's what I'm doing wiley. Only its called wia here.
Its a career retraining program attached to the NAFTA bill, and comes with some guidelines for eligibility.

When I went, they only had enough money in the program for 8 people, and 16 people applying for those positions.
It was like applying for a job. You had to score within the top 8 on entrance exams and pick a program the gov felt was not going to be outsourced.
I am required to go to school full-time, non-stop until I graduate. (summers included)

Actually WIA looks to be a little different from TAA here. We have both in Oregon.

I'm going to look into either radiology tech or pharmacy tech. Both are in demand with lots of potential for growth. Depends on what I can afford though.

Yeah they make it as hard as possible. I swear. I had to go to 2 interviews. 1 with the folks at ESC and one with a board at the college. I made it, but there were many folks with kids still at home that couldnt put forth that kind of commitment and still pay the bills!

I'm not sure how exactly the TAA is supposed to work yet. I was hoping to find out today. It's a catch 22 though, I can't find out until I've been approved for it. I'm still trying to figure out the logic behind that one...

I've almost got enough money for the Pharmacy Tech course at PCC on my own. That doesn't start until June though. There's one at Apolo that starts sooner, but it's close to $11,000.

I hope you well. I was warned before my last interview with the college to do research on my career choice because they would ask me questions about it.
Like is there a shortage of people choosing that career and what kind of functions that career required of workers.

Sure enough they asked me questions like that for 30 min..

That's cool. I might already be a little ahead in the game yet. I've actually been checking out the Pharmacy tech thing for awhile. Even before I was laid off.

Cool!
I had 10 grand in savings when I started, that ran out last Aug.

I had not been to school in like 28 yrs. Now between classes and HW I spend 12-15 hrs a day devoted to school. I think I picked the hardest curriculum that they have!laugh laugh

They start every fall with 30 people, mostly kids, and 3 weeks later 50% have dropped. By the end of the year there might be 4 left!!
(No exaggeration)

Not really interested in Nursing, although it has been suggested to me before. I spent a lot of years helping out with my Aunt who was injured in a car accident. Not really looking to make a career out of it.

That sounds about right. My sister was grumbling this morning because she dropped a ton of classes and missed the deadline for getting her money back. Like that's my fault. grumble

Radiology techs make pretty good money. And that looks like something I might actually be interested in doing.
