What’s your favorite monologue from a play, musical, or other theatre performance?
Please feel free to share a quote if you have it on hand... and maybe tell us about why you like it so much.

I myself have a few favorites but my all time favorite monologue is from 1776:

"I have come to the conclusion that one useless man is called a disgrace, that two are called a law firm and that three or more become a congress! And by-god I have had this congress for ten years king George and his parliament have gulled, cullied, and diddled these colonies with their illegal taxes, stamp acts, Townsend acts, sugar acts, TEA acts. And when we dared stand up to them like men, they stopped our trade, seized our ships, blockaded our ports, burned our towns and SPILLED OUR BLOOD!! And still this congress wont grant any of my proposals on independence, even so much as the courtesy of open debate... Good God what in hell are they waiting for?"

I think I enjoy this so much because John Adams is what I want to be when I grow up, an opinionated obnoxious man who is so brilliant that nobody can find fault in his arguments and usually end up agreeing with him even though they distain him...

I like a lot of monologues. But the one I can think of right now is From Waiting for Godot. This is fabulous:

POZZO:
Stop! (Lucky stops.) Back! (Lucky moves back.) Stop! (Lucky stops.) Turn! (Lucky turns towards auditorium.) Think!

During Lucky's tirade the others react as follows.
1) Vladimir and Estragon all attention, Pozzo dejected and disgusted.
2) Vladimir and Estragon begin to protest, Pozzo's sufferings increase.
3) Vladimir and Estragon attentive again, Pozzo more and more agitated and groaning.
4) Vladimir and Estragon protest violently. Pozzo jumps up, pulls on the rope. General outcry. Lucky pulls on the rope, staggers, shouts his text. All three throw themselves on Lucky who struggles and shouts his text.

LUCKY:

Definitely.

A live performance is always much better than movies or TV...

Why do you say that they're boring? You ever seen Pirates of Penzance, lightning quick wit, love, coreographed sword fights, the human condition placed in front of you to enjoy, I'd not say by any stretch of the imagination boring... but to each their own

If you watch some plays, musicals too, I'm sure you won't find them boring. You just have to find something you like. It's like music or movies. Everyone loves both, but it's a matter of what kind etc.

Tyler Perry.. Or wholesome uplifting stage performance for me.

I have seen many Theatrical events performed on stage... and some are impressive (more so than the silver screen) and others just a waste of 100.00.... i could have been necking in the parking lot hearing it through the wall and gotten better entertainment.

Boondock Saints

The Family Prayer

"And Shepherds we shall be

For thee, my Lord, for thee.

Power hath descended forth from Thy hand

Our feet may swiftly carry out Thy commands.

So we shall flow a river forth to Thee

And teeming with souls shall it ever be.

In Nomeni Patri Et Fili Spiritus Sancti."

Il Duce's Prayers

"And when I vest my flashing sword And my hand takes hold in judgement I will take vengeance upon mine enemies And I will repay those who hase me O Lord, raise me to Thy right hand And count me amoung Thy saints ."

"Whosoever shed last blood. By man shall his blood be shed. For immunity of god make he the man. Destroy all that which is evil. So that which is good may flourish. And I shall count thee amoung my favoured sheep. And you shall have the protection of all the angels in heaven."

"Never shall innocent blood be shed. Yet the blood of the wicked shall flow like a river. The three shall spread their blackened wings and be the vengeaful striking hammer of god. "

I love almost every monologue from "The Diary of Adam and Eve". So funny, so sharp, so fresh.

Here's a sample:

EVE: We are getting along very well now, Adam and I, and getting better and better acquainted. He does not try to avoid me any more, which is a good sign, and shows that he likes to have me with him. That pleases me, and I study to be useful to him in every way I can, so as to increase his regard. During the last day or two I have taken all the work of naming things off his hands, and this has been a great relief to him, for he has no gift in that line, and is evidently very grateful. He can't think of a rational name to save him, but I do not let him see that I am aware of his defect. Whenever a new creature comes along I name it before he has time to expose himself by an awkward silence. In this way I have saved him many embarrassments. I have no defect like this. The minute I set eyes on an animal I know what it is. I don't have to reflect a moment; the right name comes out instantly, just as if it were an inspiration, as no doubt it is, for I am sure it wasn't in me half a minute before. I seem to know just by the shape of the creature and the way it acts what animal it is. When the dodo came along he thought it was a wildcat--I saw it in his eye. But I saved him. And I was careful not to do it in a way that could hurt his pride. I just spoke up in a quite natural way of pleasing surprise, and not as if I was dreaming of conveying information, and said, "Well, I do declare, if there isn't the dodo!" I explained--without seeming to be explaining--how I know it for a dodo, and although I thought maybe he was a little piqued that I knew the creature when he didn't, it was quite evident that he admired me. That was very agreeable, and I thought of it more than once with gratification before I slept. How little a thing can make us happy when we feel that we have earned it!
