Total professional!

A gynecologist was getting tired of his job and decided to switch careers. He`d always enjoyed tinkering with engines, so he enrolled in a school for auto mechanics.
When the class ended the students were given their final exam: strip a car engine completely and reassemble it in perfect working order. The gynecologist did his best - and was amazed to find he scored 150%. "How could that be?" he asked.
"Well," said the instructor, "I gave you 50% for taking the engine apart. Next, I gave you 50% for reassembling it - a fantastic job, really. And then I gave you a 50% bonus for doing it all through the exhaust pipe."drinker drinker drinker

I'm sure many of us would consider ourselves professionals at what we do. Regardless if it is a profession or not. There is certainly no harm in that.

However, there are certain occupations that merit the term, where others don't.

Some characteristics of a profession are:
*An advanced knowledge gained by experience and formal training.

*Ethical codes established and enforced, either or both within the profession and by some other regulatory establishment.

*Licensing of practitioners.

*The occupation being legally recognised as a profession.

Many parts of my occupation are one of those grey areas. Anyone can call themselves a professional computer engineer, despite their level of skill, training and experience. The industry is still too young to have been fully professionalized, and is completely unregulated.

Unlike Medicine, Law, Civil Engineering, Teaching, Accounting.... Etc...

McDonalds has a hamburger university. Therefor, all our fast food folks on JSH, you are professionals. Kudos to you. Thanks for bailing me out on those journeys to CT with my stepson. I would have lost my mind with all the kids in car if it weren't for you guys. Always smiling, ready to take my order, very professional.

ddanster, I love that,

In my opinion, a true professional is in both training and actions. It tends to be portrayed more with white collar workers, but I do not see it limited as such.

A true professional dresses in whatever uniform or work attire is required. They are knowledgeable about their area of work, and take pride in that. They communicate well, are diplomatic, courteous, dignified, enthusiastic, independent, and ambitious. In other words, they take their work seriously and that is apparent to others.

I see very few true professionals in my limited circle of court personnel, attorneys, law enforcement officers, probation and parole officers, and various mental health providers. When I do encounter a true professional, I am always very pleasantly surprised. flowerforyou

I'm sorry I even responded to topic here.. since the OP seems not to want to discuss it either. Too bad it is too late to edit.

So, sorry Lilith401, your view point was beautifully written and truthful. Got a little carried away with snoman.
