I think it's more for the movements the rider wants the horse to do.
Actually in the higher levels of Dressage is where I have seen them used.
I usually use a snaffle bit when riding or a hackamore.

If I remember right, the lower bit is for 'head set'(angle of the head and arch of the neck), and stopping, the upper is for steering.

The saddle, a tool of the trade
Decorated details etched in the leather
The smooth saddle works just as well
The smell of the leather
Mixed with the smell of the horse
Sitting cinched upon the horse
Waiting for the rider to find their place
The rider eases into place
The horse steadies under the extra weight
Leather creaks as you settle in the seat
Your foot slips into the stirrup
Your had draws up the reign
Adventure or work it's all the same
To sit in the saddle again
Oh yes, one day

Do you think I dare tell em the politically incorrect term for those strap on 'bumps' behind the saddle horn? pitchfork

Here's my buddy Whitey, Journey. He wasn't the best I ever rode, but definitely the most willing.

The man on the bay in front, was my grand-dad. His ashes are scattered in the valley above his hat.

Sorry about the quality. Pic of a pic.

That is the exact look my dogs gave me this morning when the alarm went off. laugh

What's worse? I found myself apologizing to them

sad2

The little buggers are funny. If you need to move them somewhere, they will look at you... groan... let their head flop back to the ground... then grunt and get up. All the world like a kid who doesn't wanna get outta bed.

Unless you spook them of course... then they go from 0 to 30 in .5 seconds. laugh

More like middle school Lake. They're between 3 and 6 months old. Yearlings are the teenagers of the horse world.

And yes, they are just as tall, wide, and bullet proof as any kid of comparable age. frustrated

*********

I found your pic's BrandNew. Very cool.

Thinking this would have been a better day than fishing though.
Where's the horse hiding at huh
Man I sure do miss my boys and this reminded me of them.

These little fellers were just watching the damned fool who didn't have enough sense to get out of the wind. laugh
