And I admire your bravery for asking questions like this, directandwrite. Just remember, if people are too shallow or lazy or scared to really take the time to get to know you, then they are not worth it, and it is their loss. YOu seem intelligent , honest, and thoughtful, and I have no doubt that you will find someone likewise.

It's chicken-or-egg; the media show us fantasy because we pay to see it. If we stop paying, and use our only REAL vote (the dollar) we can change what Hollywood does. But we don't. Why?
Because reality is scary. It's painful. People are lonely, and they find it easier to escape to fantasy worlds where women have big breasts and men ride shiny white horses. It takes courage to be vulnerable, to open up and share our lives; it is much easier to use any and every excuse to avoid true intimacy. We use physical appearance as an excuse to avoid becoming vulnerable.
