Long distant relationships can work if the persons involved structure that it suits bout persons. There has to be a lot of trusting involved, understanding and caring. But they are not for me, I love attention and having my person with me. Im a direct contact person and cant bother with using technology to communicate with my other half, however if I have to then I will just have to find a way to deal with it. Love can make a person do the weirdest things.

My understanding of dating is that two persons who are attracted to each other decide to spend time talking, having fun and so on to find out if they like each other enough to start a relationship; while relationship is a commitment made by the two persons that they are going to start a long term partnership to keep each other happy, through love, caring, etc. That's my opinion.
