My old addiction Changed the wiring in my brain So that when it turns the switches Then I am not the same. First lines from a song by David Wilcox. I think he knows. I have lost several friends to drugs and alcohol. Some in recovery, some not. Some intentional, some not. Always sad just the same. I dont think that it matters either way, we miss them and it is really hard to get over. |

Have you ever been addicted to any kind of drugs? If so what made you stop and save your life? I have never done drugs, but I just lost a good friend of mine to his drug addiction.  
I hit a bottom...then decided to quit. For some people bottom happens to be death. But why do they have to go that far? I am sorry I just dont understand. This is the third person that I have been close to that has done this, and it never gets easier.
I am glad that you quit as well and I hope that you are living a full and happy life.
I work at a drug alcohol treatment center and see this all the time. It is very hard to explain to someone who is not an addict. Think of it like an allergy, say poison ivy once you start scratching you can't stop. I dont think that anyone that had never done drugs can fully understand what you are talking about. That's one reason why AA and NA works so well. We understand each other. so true |

The one drug that controlled me was nicotine. Some ppl don't look at it as a drug but it is. I quit smoking 3 months ago and I just keep taking it one day at a time with no cigarettes. *****
This is also a hard one to overcome, and I am so glad that you are doing it. Like you said it is one day at a time. My best to you

I just dont understand how you can throw everything away for drugs. I have other friends that are hooked and they have lost everything, it is just so sad. If the wiring in their brain hadn't been changed from drugs, they wouldn't have thrown everything away.

Ive just celebrated my 8th month clean... I smoked meth for 25 years straight! Everything feels different for me now... im learning how to live all over again. I feel like im starting over at 46 years old! Its hard... but I know im gonna make it! What made me stop?? Me. One day I just woke up and said..."Im f*ckin done", and I havent used since! No meetings, no support groups... just my Mingle family! AND THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE FOR ME! 
With that..im blessed! THANKS MINGLE!!
I am so happy for you, and very glad that you stopped using. You have a new lease on life, so live it up!!

A lot of other things but no drugs. My only addiction is ... dare I say... WWE Wrestling & Music. I can't get enough of either at times. 
Nothing wrong with either one of them, unless you let them take over your life. JMO

I'm sorry for ya Lex it really sucks I wish people were wiser and stronger when it comes to that ---- . Thanks. I do believe that sometimes we have to learn things the "hard way" -- but when you lose your life over it, something is very very wrong.... Yes there is, and I think that is what I am struggling with, is was it worth it in the long run? We know the answer to that question, but we will never get it from him.

I went through my little "experimental phase" from 19-22, did some reading, found out some stuff, and just stopped. No drugs, no alcohol since then, and never again. Mostly, all it ever did was give me a headache anyway. In the interim, I have lost a LOT of people I cared about to drugs and alcohol. That's also one reason my marriage ended. I don't want any of that stuff in my life. Period. I wish that people would learn what you did and stay away from that stuff. I wish that he had listened to us. Now all I can do is pray for his family. |
