Can something be done about future asteroid collisions with earth? Yes it can. Will stocking up food help when this does happen? Yes, it is very unlikely that such a collision would wipe us all out at once, but without preperation we will surely die off. Will the earth outlive us? According to history, probably, but the earth itself cannot last forever nor can our solar system, our gallaxy or the universe itself.

Some folks clearly "don't give a rats ass" about the future world of our children, thank god NASA is ahead of the call, not that people won't stop taking our world for granted, but there is hope;^]

Ahhh, thought it might be one of those movies that deflects a NEO with missles, missles definatly wouldn't work. I'll have to check it out sometime;^]

Luckily the sattelite isn't big enough to trigger a mass extinction, but NEO's are a major threat with the really big ones. It's a bit disheartening but a reality, that asteroid impact isn't a matter of if but when & how big will it be.

I can't believe how naive some folks are about these things, like the teenager who thinks he'll live forever. Not that one should worry about it constantly but they should be aware, it can't last forever. Remember what living only in the now got Janis Joplin? If we don't plan for our futures we don't stand a chance;^]

I thought Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thorton already successfully particed the NEO senerio in Armagedon... oh that was just a movie.laugh drinker

Haven't seen that movie;^]

what i have heard few days ago on radio a spy satelite is fallen towards the earth & no one knows where it will hit also on the asteroid thing also heard few days ago on radio you can see from a telescope going to pass earth just by mere 100,000 miles i could be off on how close it will be towards the earth..

Well I could get trampled by a pregnant elephant on the way to the mailbox

Especialy if you're looking the other way.

However, that's a low odd scenerio, asteroid collision with earth is a high odd scenerio. Google "near earth objects NASA" & you'll get a list of info directly from NASA;^]

I think Edwards is going to be Obamas running mate. I'd like to see Nader as attorney general and Biden as sec. state, right men for the job;^]

I say wait until the day happens to think about it. No point in putting such things into your head. Live it like you have been and when (if) it happens then deal with it at that point.

Good thing the good folks at NASA don't think that way, not knowing how to deflect an asteroid would be pretty dissasterous when it's within close range, The odds of us getting hit are actualy against us. It wiped out the dinosaurs & it could easily wipe us out. Living only for today is a recipe for extinction, planning for the future is neccesary if our species is to survive such a dissaster;^]

Anyone with a high school education that included Biology knows that energy doesn't end, it simply changes form. So the world will not die, it will simply change, and we do that on a daily basis anyway. Let's try to focus on things that are important huh? Like getting our nails done K?

Energy may not end, but the earth and the universe will. Eventualy the earths core will burn out, eventualy the sun will die, eventualy our milky way gallaxy will collide with the andramida gallaxy, and even further down the universe will end in what is called the big crunch. Other scenerios are possible too, a black hole could drift too close, a huge asteroid could destroy the planet, the earth has come close to ending already several times. Neither the earth nor the universe will last forever;^]

dun da dun dun.....dddddddddddaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.... hey gloom and doom, those are only therories.

Only theories? They're certainly not hypothisis, they've been measured and shown to be accurate, the earths core cannot burn eternaly, neither can our sun (we've been observing the life and death of stars for quite some time now). We can see Andramida coming torwards us, combined with the fact that we've observed merger gallaxies and that eventualy the super massive black holes in the center of both gallaxies will merge and eventualy swallow up most if not all matter within, and we've got an inevitable end to our species, our planet and all of life as we know it. The universe will in fact end in a big crunch, we measure the expansion of it & we know that eventual retraction has to happen.

All of these things however, are billions if not trillions of years away. The most present danger is debated as being earth bound asteroids or climate change (not concerning nuclear warfare). Stephen Hawking seems to think climate change is the most important crisis we've ever faced, He also supports the terraforming & colonisation of mars. But earth bound asteroids we have some 200 in our sight, but those aren't the dangerous ones, the dangerous ones are the ones we know are there yet can't see. No hypothisis here, this is true astro science;^]

Science interest me. You don't. By your catering to the fears of these sheep. I've seen your post before. S-T-U-P-I-D. You act like you are so educated. When will the world end and what are the odds? You don't know. You can only guess. And act like your an authority on this subject when you are on a dating website talking with kinowledge that was learned off NOVA. Get a life!

Excuse me? You might wanna go back & reread my posts, I haven't tried to predict "when" and in fact I said noone will know when. Every thing I've said is accurate, and agreed upon in the scientific community, the earth nor the universe will last forever. I'm not fearmongering, these things are true, I'm keeping it real, turn a blind eye to a fist flying at you & you get knocked out, all a matter of reason & physics. I'm sorry that you don't care enough to want to deflect an asteroid or to plan for an exodus from earth if dissaster strikes, but more than that I'm sorry you feel you need to resort to your negative speaking. I won't bother responding if you can't be civil, I'm not getting sucked into that cynicism again;^]

Guess what Turtle? Who cares? Save the world and end up getting run over by a car outside your house.

Plenty of people care, who cares that you don't? Personaly, I'll continue to care about the planet, people other than myself, and more importantly future generations. The world is bigger than me & science holds the key;^]

And It will happen in 20 minutes. Act accordingly. lol

I'm not one of those "the end is near" people, but to ignore the fact that the earth can and will end is to doom the planet to certain death. They are working on ways to deflect earth bound asteroids and such, so we may be able to buy more time. But it's only knowladge to carry the fact that it can't last forever. 2012? I doubt it, if we can avoid an asteroid impact we might make it a few billion years unless climate change recreates a permian extinction situation;^]

True that! My ex-husband has never voted but he's the first to criticize. I used to just tell him to shut up, he didn't have any right to an opinion laugh laugh laugh

I got some friends who do that, yet they wonder why people don't take their political opinions seriously..lol;^]
