A date is a ritual in which you engage each other in conversation and activities in order to get to know whether or not your emotionaly, mentaly and physicaly compatitable. A positive experience will normally result in another date to further explore your connection with the other. Or if your really lonely it may result in intimacy...lol sorry.

Spending time with another just means you are together, but does not require any engagement of conversation or activities and really has no meaning at all but to fill a void of loneliness. That's pretty pathetic, just call it a date to save face!!!
