The earth as well as all the other planets is the result of the continuous accretion of the elemental byproducts that themselves came from the fusion reactions of previous stars. During the formation of the solar system, an accretion disk eventually clumped into the planetary bodies as well as the asteroid belt, kuiper belt, and oort cloud we know of today. Meteors, comets and asteroids are what remain from the initial accretion periods.
