Amen to the OP. The hard thing is stopping at "nice guy" before becoming "doormat". "Nice" is, by definition, a good thing. And interestingly enough, obsolete meanings of the word were "shy, reluctant, or coy". Maybe these are the things a "nice guy" needs to drop to improve his chances.
