you did have an experience which did not work. but i think it's not a generality. if the people in contact have the most of their goals in life in harmony, it should work. and surely, there is someone in some area in the world sharing with you most of your goals in life.

I think it's a way like others to start a relationship. long distance is not a problem. the future depends on the king of people and their goals. If their goals in life are matching, it is possible the relationship works.
