My son's school has a zero tolerance rule for fighting. No student is allowed to lay a hand on another student. if a fight starts on school grounds, the police are automatically brought in and both students are given 3 day suspensions. The parents must come to the school and talk to the principle before the student can return to school. This has really worked well and the number of school incidents has gone way down. However, the fights do happen. They just move them off of school grounds.

Assaulting a teacher is grounds for immediate removal from school and the student must attend an alternative school.

I don't know what your school's policies are but I think a revision is needed and the staff who did nothing needs to be held accountable.

Thanks for caring enough to put yourself at risk to help the child they were attacking.flowerforyou

I like the sound of your son's school, I wish we would adopt those principles here. I'm afraid there are too many on the bandwagon of 'let's protect the child at all costs' I'm just wondering, what would have been my punishment if I had walked on by and left the girls to fight like the others did?

As for would I do it again? Yep, I am in this job because I felt I can change someone's life.

"Irish Drinking Song"

well i stumbled in at 2 a.m. all drunk and full of smoke
my wife said i have had enough, im sick, thats it, get out!
so i stumbled down to kellys pub across the edge of town
and i told the boys me story and we had another round

we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!
we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!
and if i see a pretty girl, ill sleep with her tonight!
we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!

and mary mcgregor, she was a pretty w***e
she'd always greet you with a smile and never lock her door
but on the day she died, all the men in town did weep
for mary mcgregor finally got some sleep

we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!
we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!
and if i see a pretty girl, ill sleep with her tonight!
we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!

well i once loved a girl, a child im told
i gave her my heart and she gave me a cold
so now i sit standing here out in the pouring rain
ill stumble back to kellys pub and cry away me pain

we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!
we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!
and if i see a pretty girl, ill sleep with her tonight!
we'll drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and drink and fight!

no, the girls in question should not be allowed to get physical with a member of the staff, no more than it would be suitable if the rolls were reversed.

i don't know the laws that govern this type of behavior in your country but, it seems to me that children everywhere are more likely to get away with this than an adult would.(rightfully so, in some cases) however, i feel as though these kinds of acts should be dealt with on a level that the child (student) can understand. at some point we all have to be taught that there are consequences to our actions. as a teen this individual (imo) is old enough to know better than to put a hand on anyone, much less an authority figure.

i would say yes, involve the police...if nothing else, to protect your self.

I got the impression that this young woman felt it was wrong of me to stop the fight, where did she think she was, a ranch? Bearing in mind that the bell had rung signalling the end of the lunch break, they were intent on doing what they thought they had to do (a law unto themselves) So far this month ( and we have only been back at school for a little over four weeks) the children have broken the toilets ( so where are they going to go when the need arises?) destroyed every last one of the water fountains, taken the fire exit doors off, broken several double glazed windows......... The list is endless!! I will await the verdict on Monday, I have already informed my union.

ahhhh to be young again...laugh

I'll tell you one thing, if i had acted this way in school my parents would have been made sure it only happened once. the faculty and the authorities would have been the least of my worries.

We get no backing from most parents, instead they will come into the school and tell you that their child did NOT do whatever it is you told the parents the child did. How the hell can the parent vouch for their child when they were not even present in school when their child was misbehaving?

I have to agree with the old wives tale............ The only child you can vouch for is the unborn one in your stomach.

I will be taking the matter further. I will be take the matter to the head.Apparently a deputy head took another girl away from the scene, I did not see him nither did he come back!! noway noway When I viewed a playback of the images it looked horrendous, kids were pushing (thank God there was no sound) the noise was unbelievable! Some of the boys were barking, some were howling like wolves, there were cheers of 'fight, fight' and then there were those who were pushing the girls into each other to fight. It was a scene from 'Lord Of The Flies'

I was not phased for one moment, just peed off that I was calling on my two way radio and no one responded. I was told later that my line manager was responding........... Strange, I did not hear her and she was right outside the GLASS doors leading into the corridor where it all took place./color]

Sorry this happend. Are you ok??Report every one involved. To make sure that this does not happen again! Tuff shi## if they don't like it.You didn't like the way you were left either.
Good Luck..noway grumble

Hi Chick, I'm fine now, just very upset earlier. I have written up my reports and informed my union.

I did not realize until now that we both work in the same profession/environment however I'm getting the impression that you work in a school setting whereas I'm working in a private home w/ troubled youths.I am shocked & appalled by the fact that your co-workers failed to come to your aid & assist especially the male who is trained in restraint.Wow!Bonnie;( I'm sorry this happened to you.My initial thought is to press charges against the establishment & the child who assaulted you. However bear in mind that this action although justified & correct may carry consequences for example a black mark upon your record to be used against you in the future.U may want to consider sending resumes to other schools in the meantime if you choose to remain in this field.Despite the fact that I'm currently dealing w/ hour & benefits reduction I will say that myself & my co-workers have each others back when restraint is concerned or breaking up altercations.I have been assaulted twice so far & the second incident cost me 2 months of physical grief & loss of in-line skating.;( I'm afraid you'll have to weigh the checks & balances & make your final decision within a timely manner.Which ever you decide though I wish you the best Bonnie.Much Luv & Godspeed!Cy  flowerforyou

Thank you Cy. flowerforyou Hasn't the world we live in become a strange place? I have turned this over and over in my head (trying to find a solution) I know if I let this go it will open the floodgates for anyone else who would like to take a 'pop' at the teachers, and I also know that I would become the outcast in the eyes of some members of staff who have major ostirchcitis, if they do not acknowledge it, then it is not happening.

One of my collegues told me that I have to make a stand for the future of all of us, to let it go would mean we have handed even MORE power over to the children ( they already have control of the school) we are a school in 'special measures' meaning we are not performing up to the standards set out by the government. We are being taken over by a private company September. The current head will lose her job, there is already a new head in place and most of the senior staff will not be employed when the new academy opens.

Morale is low and adults are tired. We are tired of being sworn at, spat at and kicked, but all we can do is give detentions, and the children will tell you they will not be staying for detention because their parents would come to the school and 'knock you out' The children raise the bar every day, smoking cigarettes is now a minor crime, they have graduated to smoking hash and marijuana in full view of staff.

Sending up a prayer for the safe return of the little girl.

Also sending up a prayer for this family, for the mum who needs God's guidance and for the souls of the dear little ones.

A mother has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her two young children after their bodies were found in the boot of a car.

The tragedy unfolded after Fiona Donnison, a 43-year-old former City worker - walked into a police station just after 11am and told officers to search her hatchback car, which was parked nearby.

After forcing open the boot, police discovered the bodies of her son Harry, three, and her two-year-old daughter Elise.

Reports claimed the youngsters had been placed in separate sports bags and had been dead 'for some time'.

Mrs Donnison's mental health is being assessed after she was admitted to hospital with apparently self-inflicted cuts to her wrists and upper arms.It emerged today she had lost a months old baby girl named Mia to cot death in April 2004.

She has yet to be interviewed by police and doctors have described her condition as 'stable'.

Her husband, the father of the two children, is being comforted by police. Mrs Donnison also had two other sons - Will, 15, and 12-year-old Ollie - from a previous marriage.

Police have sealed off the family's home - a detached £500 000 house less than 100 yards from the quiet residential street in Heathfield, East Sussex, where the grim discovery was made at 11.46am.

A police source said there was no obvious cause of death.

The car - a silver T-reg Nissan hatchback with a personalised numberplate - has been taken away to be examined.

Sources told the Daily Mail that there had been 'domestic problems' between Mrs Donnison and her husband, and that their marriage had recently come under strain.

noway shocked surprised WTF???????????

I have no words for this. I am unable to conceive of the fact that the adults left you to deal with this assault on your own. frustrated

Why are they saying you should not report it to the police?

I have no idea as to their reasons for me not reporting the matter to the police apart from they do not want the school's name to be dragged even further into the mud ( at my expense) This is not the first time I have been assulted either. The last time the head called the police in to escort the child involved off the premises, so what is the difference this time? The other child was a special needs child and has no concept of right from wrong, he has no cognitive or social skills and is locked in a world of his own.
