My cat is 14yrs old but doing well. I met a man in the grocery store pet food section, who said his cat was 20yrs old.

That must be hard to go through, having a pet that you know is older. My sister had a dog that was very active, then became half blind.

My 5 mews would have been 17 this year, but lost all but 2 this year,
also lost the dog who was 20.

Devastating..and 2 mews to go that are elderly.

We are still adjusting, they play such a big part in one's life.
I cry a river..

I remember as a kid, our family dog just stopped eating. She was a bigger dog, like a siberian Husky mix and 9 years old and would not eat anything. The vet could't find what was wrong and she was wasting away. She was put to sleep. i feel bad about that.

That must have been hard, delightful. Cats are really great pets.

23 is a really good age for a cat.

It's very hard to have your pets put down but often for the best.
Saves the suffering for both them and you!

my brothers cat lived to be 21. Ive had pets that stopped eating and died overnight, sick pets that had to get vet treatment, and pets that had to be killed by the vet. Any way it happens it breaks my heart, but they have all been rescues and over the years, the joy of giving them a good home far outweighs the sadness of how they had been mistreated. I feel sorry for any good owner who loses a pet...just know you did the nicest thing for them in their final years.

Yeah, I still wonder now about what happened to my family dog when I was a kid. I think she could have been saved.

Yes it was but I took comfort in the fact that he had a good life and was loved and looked after. I guess if he lived to that age I must have done a good job.

That's true !

Although this thread is a bit Sad about loosing pets !

Sorry to hear that soufie.

Ahhh the circle of life.
The joy of loving them a long time enables you
to see it through.

Tough year for losing pets and I fear the last
2 are right behind.

But my babies never missed a meal or a cuddle
and there were 5 of them (abandoned in my garage
the day they were born) to play with each other..
so like Di, I know they had a great life, thank
you for the sympathy :-)

Hi darlene. I have heard many stories of pets who have saved lives of their owners. Do you have any stories to share?

I copied this from another post I made, but the pet saves the family !!

When 10-year-old Abigail Bruce was given a pet goat for her birthday her dad wasn’t exactly excited. “I didn’t approve of him at first,” Nick Bruce told Inside Edition. “But he’ll be here from now on.”

That’s because the goat, which Abigail named “Speedy,” turned out to be a true lifesaver two days after he came to their home in Weiner, Arkansas.
Abigail was sleeping in the living room with the goat, when Speedy woke her up by jumping on her legs and then her chest.

“I was thinking what’s happening? And all I seen was smoke,” she told local WREG TV. Abigail ran to her parents’ bedroom. Turns out the garage was on fire, but the Bruces were able to jump out of the bedroom window and onto the front lawn. The fire department showed up minutes later and extinguished the fire. However, the smoke and soot damaged everything in the house. Everything but their admiration for their life-saving goat.

I don't have any pets now, but one of my dearest pets was Smokey "Bones", he lived to be around 18 or so. He was my boy from the get go, me and him have been through thick and thin up to his death due to natural causes. He literally took his last breath in my arms. I weeped like a little school girl for a good week or so, I was lost without him. He was a very close companion to me.

I want to get a dog for my kids, but I don't know about all that right now. I guess we'll see what happens, when it happens.

Sorry to hear that soufie.

And now there is one pet (of 6) left and he is a handful..
zips around, jumps on and off the bed like a youngster so
we are enjoying Fred immensely right now, just what we
needed after losing all the rest to old age ;-)

I remember my sisters' first horse was a black and white pinto named Flash and he was very good. My sister advanced in her training and bought a new horse. Even though Flash was sold long ago, we were in touch and he lived a long age into his 40's. it was sad when he died.
