Personally I hate when people buy me clothes, but IMO it should be once you guys know each other very well, like atleast a year or so into a relationship, but that's just me.

I wouldn't show up with something on the first date, but I don't really see the problem with this. For holidays? Personally, I think it's the easy way out, but it works.
