Fica is social security at 12.4% and medicare at 2.9% Disability is a part of these programs. The emplyer pays half and the employees pay half. Self employed people pay both portions. Look into going to an S~Corp shoes then the business will carry 1/2 of your tax burden.

FICA Tax

TaxesPayroll taxes for Social Security benefits are collected under the authority of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act or FICA. Most people simply refer to these taxes as FICA tax. This tax had its origins back in 1935 when the tax was part of the Social Security program.

If you are making 400 a week on unemployment, and have no child care, and no other expenses...gas ect...

why would you take a job making 350 a week and then add in child care at 100-200 a week, and gas and ect... what kind of financial decision is that???

What is your opinion of people who are able to work, but sit home and collect unemployment due to laziness?

I think that it is easy to make assumptions without considering all the facts. I think it is something that should be judge on a case by case basis.

Well, my brother "works" two months a year to collect unemployment. Somehow he is broke for 12 days of the 14 days he has to wait for unemployment. He really is a leech on society it's really sad. he's 28 and has no ambition or will to do anything besides smoke weed or drink. It's really sad I'm much younger have had a car since the day I drove and always keep busy with school or work. He's a real piece of work.

When did NJ change their unemployment requirements? As of 2001, you had to work 20 weeks and make over $2020 in a quarter to be eligible for UI benefits.

FICA is Federal and goes to disability.

Unemployment Insurance is at the State level and varies by State. In Oregon, the employer pays UI taxes, the employee doesn't. (Self employed pay as if they're an employer.)

I am single and an S corp would be crazy that means that if I marry the person I marry can take 1/2 of my business .. I am an LLC so that my personal assets and my business are not one in the same like in an S corp ..

Frankly, it p*sses me off. I have worked all my life, I was taught to work. I never drew a dime of unemployment up until about five years ago...thats a pretty good record, thirty years. Theres a guy down the road on disability....nothing wrong with him.....he can dig post holes and build chicken houses but he can't work? Yes, lets support him.

and thus a social security discussion developed
